Chapter 5

“No game.” My voice stayed flat. “You wanted me to give it to her, right?”

“Or if you’d rather give her something else, that’s fine too.”

Jon’s eyes narrowed. “Fine. Fine. You want to act like this? Then get out. Give Tiffany your spot.”

I blinked. “Now?”

“Now.” He laughed, cold. “What, changed your mind?”

I didn’t answer. Just packed.

Five years in that house, and everything I owned fit in one carry-on.

Jon’s face got darker.

Right before I left, he stopped me. Fingered my coat.

“This is mine. I bought it. Looks better on her anyway.”

I looked at the snow outside. Looked at him.

Unbuttoned the coat. Put it on Tiffany.

Met his eyes. “What else?”

His jaw tightened. He shoved me out the door.

“You’re something else, Evelyn.”

Slam.

I hit the ground hard. My knee split open. But he kept my

The wind hit me like a wall.

I got up, limped back, pounded on the door.

“Jon! My suitcase! Give it back!”

My clothes. My money. My phone. My ID.

Nothing.

Silence. Snow.

I was in a thin top. My hands and feet were already red, already numb.

I knew I wouldn’t last long.

I made it to the mall somehow. Security stopped me at the door, I looked homeless. I begged,

explained.

The guy almost felt bad. But not enough. “Look, miss, it’s not us. It’s Mr. Hartwell’s orders.”

This whole city, and nowhere to go.

How could he be this cruel?

My feet stopped feeling. I kept walking anyway.

Stop, and I die.

Ashland was so cold.

My tears were the only warm thing I had.

I found an underpass. There was some cardboard, a blanket, some stale food-and a frozen

homeless guy.

In the middle of a blizzard, I crawled to the farthest corner, terrified out of my mind.

When I was thirsty, I ate snow. When I was hungry, I slept.

The frostbite flared up so bad I cried every day from the pain.

Whenever I heard footsteps, I’d drag that frozen body in front of me like a shield.

Two days. I shared that space with a dead man for two days.

Christmas Eve. I crawled out of that underpass and begged for food.

The mall’s big screen was playing headlines about Jon and Tiffany. He’d dropped a fortune on

fireworks, the whole city lit up, just for her. Midnight, they’d set them all off.

Someone handed me a cold sandwich. I choked it down, mumbling thanks between bites. Security

still kicked me out. Didn’t matter that I was in a corner, out of the way.

Night fell. I couldn’t stop shaking.

Three. Two. One.

Fireworks exploded across the sky.

And right as my vision started to fade, a black Escalade pulled up in front of me.
