“What did she do?”
He laid out the mess,
“The Harrows are fine. The Harrow patriarch is too shrewd to get played by her. But logistics is a problem.”
“How much did they freeze?”
“Three million dollars. The money isn’t the point. The fact that they froze it is a blood-in-the-water signal
to the industry.”
“What do you need me to do?”
“Can you have Director Harrison reach out to them? Their CEO worked with your lab years ago.
“I can’t mix professional ties with your private business.”
“Then what do I do?”
“You can’t handle this yourself?”
He was silent for a few beats.
“I’ll find a way.”
“Pierce.”
“Yeah?”
“Amber going after your partners means she has information you didn’t know she had. When you were still ‘dating,’ did you ever bring her to internal business meetings?”
“…Once.”
“What did she hear?”
“Project timelines and internal quotes.”
“Your information management is abysmal.”
“I know.”
I hung up.
When I got back to the lab, Dr. Helen was leaning against the doorframe, waiting.
“Trouble again?”

“That woman is sabotaging Pierce’s business.”
“You aren’t going to help him?”
“He can handle his own fres. It’s too easy for me to step in, but that would only feed Amber’s hate. I need her to bury herself.”
“You’re sure she will?”
“She hit two partners. One ignored her, one froze funds. She’s tasted blood-she’ll widen her net.”
“And then?”
“Then she’ll bump into someone she shouldn’t.”
Sure enough, Amber didn’t stop.
On the fifth day, she tracked down the Summit Group’s biggest competitor for a new project: a firm called Ironwood Development.
The CEO, Mr. Blackwood, had been locked in a bitter, long-standing rivalry with Pierce Mason.
Amber took him to lunch. Her play was simple: she offered him internal quotes and Summit Group’s commercial strategy as leverage.
The only condition: he had to spread rumors about Eleanor Coates.
Blackwood took the deal.
How did I know?
Thomas Sterling told me.
His intelligence network was lightyears ahead of Pierce’s.
“Eleanor, your rival isn’t simple,” Sterling’s tone on the phone was light. “A woman with no money or power, just a mouth, and she’s got Summit Group in chaos.”
“She’s not powerless. Her biggest weapon is Pierce’s negligence regarding her access.”
“True. But teaming up with Blackwood? She’s crossed a line.”
“How so?”
“Blackwood was under scrutiny by the regulatory board just last week-his books are hardly clean. If news gets out that he’s colluding with your Amber, it’ll be a disaster for him.”
“So, if someone were to put their meeting out in the open…”

Sterling chuckled on the other end.
‘Eleanor, you’re sharper than your father. He was a genius at research, but a total blockhead with people.”
I didn’t answer.
That night, Pierce called to say the logistics issue was resolved. He’d flown to their headquarters for a
two-hour face-to-face.
“The funds are released. Their CEO apologized, said Amber misled him.”
“Good.”
“Eleanor, you heard about Amber reaching out to Ironwood, didn’t you?”
“I did.”
“Do you have a plan?”
“I do.”
“Tell me.”
“No. Your information management skills aren’t up to the task.”
