Chapter 23
The ceremony was set for the start of the month.
But Amber showed up before the invite did.
Two days before the event, she appeared in the main lobby of Summit Group HQ
No sharp makeup this time. No heels.
She was wearing a white hoodie, hair messy, clutching a paper bag.
She marched past the front desk toward the elevators.
Security tried to block her, but she shoved their hands away. “I’m here to see Pierce. He’s going to talk to
me.”
His assistant escorted her upstairs.
Pierce saw her in the executive office.
He left the door ajar and made sure the security cameras were recording.
Amber walked in and stood there for a few seconds.
Then she set the bag on his desk.
“Everything you ever gave me is in here. The jewelry, the cards, the receipts for the bags. I’m giving it all
back.”
Pierce didn’t touch the bag.
“Is that all you came for?”
“I came for one answer.”
“Ask it.”
す
“In those three years, was there ever a second where you were sincere with me?”
“Amber-”
“Answer me.”
Pierce looked at her.
“I cared, sometimes. But not in the way you wanted. I never loved you. You should have known that a long
time ago.”

Amber staggered back.
She gripped the corner of the desk to stay upright.
“Then why did you smile at me? Why let me come to your dinners? Why let me sit in your car?”
“Because I needed a companion for those events. You offered, and I didn’t say no. That was my mistake.”
“Your mistake?” Amber looked up, her voice suddenly shrill. “You call this your mistake? Do you know what I sacrificed for your mistake!”
“I played the part, I took the drinks for you, I entertained the wives, I backed you up in front of your friends. Do you know how those women looked at me? They laughed at me for being a delusional gold-digger!”
“I have nothing left. No job, no reputation, no friends. And now you tell me you never loved me?”
She slammed her hand on the desk.
Pierce didn’t flinch.
“Most of your situation is your own doing. You faked a wedding, you orchestrated online libel, you leaked my trade secrets to a competitor. Every step was your choice.”
“You’re putting it all on me?”
“It’s not putting it on you. It’s the truth.”
Amber’s eyes turned red.
This time, it wasn’t a performance.
She was truly on the verge of a breakdown.
“Pierce, you’ll regret this. You and that woman, both of you will regret this.”
She turned and marched toward the door.
The moment she pulled it open, she collided with two people.
Me and Director Harrison.

We were there to drop off the ceremony invitation. Pierce Mason, as the head of Summit Group, was on the guest list.
Amber froze when she saw me.
We stood face-to-face, less than two feet apart.
Her eyes were bloodshot, and her nose was red.

“What are you doing here?” she spat.
“Work.
“Come to flaunt your statis again? Think you won?”
I looked at her.
“Amber, there was never any winning or losing between us.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Because we aren’t on the same track. You were fighting for a man. I was doing my job. You put all your chips on a relationship that didn’t exist, and you lost. I didn’t win. You just made a bad bet from the start.”
Amber’s lips trembled, but no sound came out.
Director Harrison stood beside me, silent, just giving Amber one glance.
It was an empty look.
Like he was looking at someone who didn’t exist.
That kind of indifference was crueler than any anger or accusation.
Amber clutched the empty paper bag and squeezed past us, almost running down the hallway.
As the elevator doors closed, I heard a faint, choked sob from inside.
But I didn’t look back.
Director Harrison handed the invitation to Pierce.
“Next Wednesday, 2:00 PM, at the Veridia Research Center. You’re on the guest list.”
He paused.
“This ceremony is important to Coates. If you’re coming, dress the part.”
ľ
Pierce took the invitation.
He glanced at me.
I didn’t look back.
