Vera Winters, the undisputed queen of Fairview High, got her period and stained her skirt. 

I swapped clothes with her right away. 

While I was buying her tampons, the aloof genius who’d always kept his distance suddenly spoke up. 

“Got everything? Hand it over. I’ll pay.” 

And my sharp-tongued childhood friend, who lived to mock me, was suddenly meek and sweet. 

“You… you look really pretty today.” 

I froze. 

I thought they were finally seeing me. 

But when I turned to thank them, both flawless boys frowned and said in unison, “Wait, you?”

My childhood friend, Liam Young reacted first. 

He leaned against the shelf, shoved a hand through his hair, and jabbed my shoulder. 

“What the hell?” He let out a lazy laugh. “What’s gotten into you today, playing dress-up in a skirt?” 

He gave me a slow once-over and snorted. 

“You look like you wrapped yourself in a Hefty bag. The hell kind of look is that? It’s straight-up tragic. 

Honestly, if you can’t pull off a dress, just go full trash panda and call it a day.” 

He leaned in, dragging out each word. “At least… it’d… hide… you.” 

I clutched the tampons and Midol I’d just grabbed. The box crinkled in my hands. 

That’s when I heard a soft laugh above me. 

It was light, like someone humoring a joke they didn’t find funny. 

But to me, it was deafening. 

It came from the guy I’d been throwing myself at for three months. 

I kept my eyes down and bit my lip hard. 

If I snapped back at Liam now, the way I always did, I’d destroy whatever image I had left in Ethan’s eyes.
