Chapter 13
A week later was the class reunion we’d all planned.
When I walked in, Liam shifted awkwardly and waved me over.
I didn’t want to sit next to him.
As my eyes searched for another spot, Ethan cut him off, his voice low and slow. “Hazel. Sit here.”
Like he was scared I’d refuse, he added quickly, “Nowhere else to sit.”
I scanned the room and let out a breath.
I’d been late because Zane suddenly felt sick and I had to wait. I really was the last one there.
So I had no choice. I gritted my teeth and wedged myself between Liam and Ethan.
Luckily, neither of them gave me a hard time.
Liam didn’t look at me or speak. He just kept his head down, drinking.
Ethan stayed composed, occasionally putting food on my plate, not saying much either.
Then people started getting drunk. Some were sobbing into their arms. Others were confessing to their
crushes.
Liam suddenly turned to me, his eyes rimmed red, voice wrecked. “Hazel, aren’t you getting a little too close
to that guy lately?”
“Every time I’ve come by your house, your parents say you’re not there.” He stared at me, dead serious.
“Scores are about to drop. I’ve thought about it, even if your grades at our elite school weren’t amazing, they’re good enough for a top-tier university. I’ll help you figure it out, and we’ll go to Northgate City together.
Don’t go too far.”
He shot a glance at Ethan beside me and spoke faster. “Yeah, we’ve had some rough patches. But we’re childhood friends. We grew up together. Come on, let’s just make up. I’ll even say I was wrong, okay? We’ve
got too much history to just throw it away.”
“Ha.” Ethan let out a cold laugh. He was peeling shrimp, his eyes down. “Isn’t this the same guy who always said his childhood friend looked like a linebacker in a dress?”
“Who said she had a worse temper than a middle linebacker? Who said his biggest regret was being born next door to her, and he couldn’t wait to leave for college and get away?”

He placed the peeled shrimp on my plate. He tugged off his disposable gloves with slow, deliberate
movements.
Then he lifted his gaze to mine. “You’re brave and you don’t fake anything. I believe you won’t forgive him.”
The room was still buzzing. No one noticed the weird energy in our corner.
Right as some girl’s confession got a yes and the whole place erupted in cheers, I heard Ethan’s voice, low,
earnest, full of feeling.
“Hazel. I think I’ve fallen for you.”
