I dragged myself back to the classroom. 

For once, I didn’t burst in shouting, “Vera, honey, I got everything you needed!” 

I just walked quietly to my seat. 

As usual, a crowd surrounded Vera. 

They’d even taken over my spot. 

Someone asked her, “Vera, seriously, who are you gonna pick? Ethan Shaw or Liam Young?” 

They asked her that kind of thing almost every day. She always dodged it. 

But once everyone left, she’d take my hand gently and whisper, “Don’t listen to them. Ethan and I just have a bunch of clubs together, that’s why we’re tight. We’re just friends. If you’re into him, go for it.” 

This time, something made me stop and listen for her answer. 

Vera smiled sweetly, her voice bright and coy. “Ugh, why do you guys ask such hard questions? Ethan’s great, Liam’s great, it’s impossible to choose.” 

Someone egged her on. “Then just pick whoever treats you best. One of them’s gonna get his heart broken 

either way.” 

I stood there, numb. 

Vera tucked her hair behind her ear with a playful sigh. 

“But they’re both just as good to me. I mean, look at Liam-he’s brutal to Hazel, and she’s literally his childhood friend. But with me? He’s, like, so sweet and gentle.” 

“And Ethan? Hazel’s been throwing herself at him for three months and he won’t even look at her. But with me, it’s totally different.” 

She let out a dramatic sigh, like she’d been handed the world’s biggest problem. 

“What can I do? There’s only one of me. I can’t just choose and hurt one of them. So I’ll just… wait and see how they prove themselves.” 

The bell rang. 

Vera shrugged helplessly and gestured for everyone to leave. 

The moment her eyes landed on me, she pouted. “What took you so long? Now I’m stuck in here all break. I was going to go find…”
