Chapter 6

Steve asked, “How’s your mom? The wedding here is a complete mess, and Jessica is wearing the wedding

dress and won’t leave…”

“Cancel it! Cancel everything!” Ryan roared and hung up, but the phone rang again.

This time it was the hospital calling about post-abortion care. “We can’t reach your wife. Please pay

attention to her bleeding condition.”

Ryan asked, “When did this happen?”

The doctor answered, “Yesterday. Ms. Carter was brought in barely clothed, with severe abdominal trauma.

The baby couldn’t be saved.”

Ryan instantly lost all strength, collapsing to the floor.

Emily’s teaching notes scattered on the ground.

Ryan picked them up with trembling hands, reading each page greedily.

Three years ago when he first took over the school, facing doubts from the board of directors, Emily had voluntarily helped him reorganize the teaching system, staying up nights to help him develop reform plans.

She was always the first to arrive at school and the last to leave, giving everything for his career.

And how had he repaid her?

Ryan closed his eyes in agony.

In his mind appeared Emily’s desperate look when surrounded by angry parents, and her face, pale as paper,

after being tormented with toys all night…

He cried out, “What have I done…”

For the next week, Ryan was like a walking corpse.

He searched every place Emily might go-the school, library, her favorite coffee shop.

He even contacted all her friends and classmates, but found nothing.

He waited downstairs all night, hoping that maybe tonight Emily would come home.

He would give her a big hug and tell her he was wrong.

A week later, the doorbell rang one evening.

Ryan practically jumped up and rushed to the door, but froze the moment he opened it.

Jessica stood outside, her eyes red.

“Ryan…” she threw herself into his arms. “Why haven’t you answered my calls these past few days? I was so

worried!”

Ryan instinctively pushed her away. “My mother is awake.”

Each word seemed squeezed through Ryan’s teeth. “Three years ago, you deliberately accelerated and

crashed into her, didn’t you?”

Jessica’s legs gave out, nearly collapsing to the floor.

She grabbed Ryan’s sleeve, tears streaming down her face. “Ryan, let me explain! I was so scared then. Aunt Margaret said she would expose my fake credentials and transfer you to an overseas branch. I couldn’t bear

being separated from you.”

Ryan shook off her hand, his eyes full of disgust.

Jessica screamed hysterically. “I just wanted to scare her! I’ve liked you since childhood, since kindergarten… you said you would marry me! What is Emily Carter? She’s just a mistress who took

advantage!”

Hearing this, Ryan’s eyes became dangerously cold.

He grabbed Jessica’s chin, his grip so tight she cried out in pain. “If I hear you curse Emily one more time, I’ll

make sure you never speak again.”

Jessica was terrified.

Just then, Ryan’s phone rang.

“Principal Mitchell, we have a problem!” Principal Thompson’s voice was urgent. “The parent who caused

trouble last time brought reporters to the school demanding answers! She checked her home surveillance-it

wasn’t Ms. Carter who seduced her son, it was Ms. Brooks!”

Ryan’s gaze slowly turned to Jessica, his eyes filled with disbelief and disgust. “Immediately suspend all of

Jessica Brooks’ duties and cooperate with the police investigation. Contact the media to prepare a

statement restoring Ms. Carter’s reputation.”

After hanging up, Ryan looked at Jessica’s tear-stained face and suddenly felt incredibly absurd.

This was the person he had always treasured, not hesitating to hurt Emily for!

“Get out.” He pointed to the door. “From now on, don’t let me see you again.”

Jessica laughed hysterically. “Ryan Mitchell! Do you think Emily will forgive you? You let her be humiliated in front of the entire school until she miscarried. You know exactly how your friends played with her! She’ll never forgive you in this lifetime!”

Ryan felt as if his heart was being pierced by a sharp knife. “Get out!”

Three months passed in a flash.

Across the ocean, I was participating in a tariff negotiation meeting, practicing simultaneous interpretation.

The nightmare from three months ago, the pain of miscarriage, the despair of public humiliation-all had been pushed aside by my busy schedule.

During the meeting break, my senior David Wilson handed me a cup of green tea.

I took the cup, but accidentally brushed his fingers with mine.
