After that, we were locked in a cold war.
Liam, bold as ever, dragged Vera straight to the homeroom teacher.
He argued that my grades were too low and I’d drag the class down. They moved me to the back row.
The pep rally speech I’d spent weeks preparing? Replaced by Ethan’s “Study Tips” presentation.
And Vera, who’d always been so low-key, suddenly got very social.
She wore that adorable smile and handed out homemade cookies to everyone.
The whole class got one. When she got to me, she bit her lip, her face full of fake hurt. “Sorry. I can’t give you
one.”
The moment people looked over, she spoke in that soft, vague way.
“Everyone’s their own person. I can’t control who wants to be my friend. But Hazel, I really hope you’ll come
around and apologize to them.”
“That’s what they want too. If you just admit you were wrong, everything can go back to the way it was.”
I snapped.
Right before she could turn the whole class against me, I slammed my hands on the desk and stood up.
“Vera, what the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Liam reacted faster than she did.
He’d been hovering around our classroom door more than usual. Like he was waiting for something.
The second he saw it, he rushed in.
He finally had his opening. He sneered at me.
“You’ve got some nerve asking that. I didn’t realize you were this vicious. You failed at copying Vera, so now you’re taking it out on her? You’re freezing her out?”
I laughed, utterly incredulous, and opened my mouth to fire back.
But Liam was faster. He yanked the white sundress from my drawer and held it up.

“I’ve known you eighteen years. You’ve never worn a dress. Now suddenly you’re dressed like this, and you’re
not copying Vera?”
“If you really wanted to try, you could’ve just asked her for advice. Vera’s sweet, she would’ve helped you.”
That’s when Ethan walked in, fresh from his competition.
He stepped up beside Vera, expression cold. He was clearly there to back her up.
Seeing the tension, he tried to play peacemaker. “Hazel, just be honest. So what if you admit it? Apologize, and then both Vera and I will help you pick out a better dress. There’s no need to…”
“That’s not true.” A quiet voice cut him off.
It was a girl who hardly ever spoke. She pushed her glasses up and stated the facts firmly. “That dress is Vera’s. She stained it and started crying. Hazel felt bad for her and offered to swap clothes. The dress was so uncomfortable that Hazel even skipped the sprint that day.”
She looked at Vera with genuine curiosity.
“Vera, you were there. Why didn’t you say a single word while Hazel was being attacked?”
