Logan
Kael and Cassian were both already waiting in the throne room by the time I stepped in. They
remained silent as I made my way to the throne, barely managing to keep my irritation
hidden. I’d expected a report from them days ago, and when it hadn’t come, I’d had no other
option than to send for them myself. Even though deep down, I already knew what their
response to my question would be.
If they’d discovered anything new, I would be the first person to get notified. I turned my
attention to them as I lowered myself down on the throne, my jaws clenching.
“Nothing yet?” I asked.
Kael shook his head, his jaw ticking. I knew he was just as livid as I was about the whole
situation. “Still no sign of Bruce,” he said. “We tracked deeper into the northern woods.
Doubled back. Searched the riverbend. Nothing.” He darted a glance at Cassian for a spell,
before his eyes came back to meet mine. “We found something similar at the southern end. Something similar to what we’d seen up north,” That had me leaning forward. “Claw prints,
tiny droplets of blood, marks made into the trees.”
My gaze bounced between them. “And?” I urged.
Cassian let out a small sigh of disappointment, giving his head a small shake. “It was just like what we’d discovered the last time, in every sense of the word.” He added. “It was a dead end. The blood trail had quickly gotten cold, ending at some random point in the woods.” I nodded, cursing myself inwardly for feeling hopeful. I needed to realize this was bigger than anything. I’d faced in the past. And attacks like they were planning, didn’t just happen in a day.
It was obvious we would have met the same fate, no matter the direction we had taken during
our first patrol. He’d made sure we would end up with the same results either way. I muttered a curse beneath my breath. “Anything else?” I asked.

Chapter 26
“Luke. He broke.”

My gaze snapped to him. He what? Why hadn’t he just gone with that? “He finally talked,”
Kael confirmed. “Said he hadn’t just seen Bruce hanging around the perimeter that night. He’d
also seen him going to the perimeter days before that.” My eyebrows furrowed. Going to the
perimeter regularly simply meant he’d been meeting up with someone.
Maybe even more than one person. People that weren’t members of our pack. But they
couldn’t also be rogues. If they were hiding out in the woods, we definitely would have already
found their hideout spot with how hard we’d been searching.
Again, if Luke had noticed this night before the attack, why hadn’t he reported it still? I could
tell Kael and Cassian were both following my train of thoughts. Thankfully, Kael had bothered
to find out. He raised a shoulder in a semi-casual shrug. “He’d still given the same reason, no
matter what we did to get the truth out of him. Said he was scared. Didn’t want to accuse
someone higher ranked.”
“So he’d done nothing,” I muttered. “Just acted like he hadn’t known there was some fishy
business going on.” I shook my head at the pathetic fool. He’d definitely dug a huge grace for
himself. “Even after everything, after the attack, the deaths, the breach, he still didn’t speak up until now?” Kael didn’t need to answer. We both knew what that meant. “He’s either hiding
more,” I said, “or he’s even dumber than I thought.”
I pushed myself up from the chair. “Put the entire pack on alert,” I ordered. “No blind spots.
Rotate the guards as much as you can. Nobody walks alone, not even Omegas.”
He nodded. “Understood.”
“And I want messages sent to the neighboring packs. All of them. Let them know we’ll be entering their territories in the coming days. We’re tracking a rogue, and we’re not asking for
permission. We’re simply giving notice.”
“Some of them might push back.”

Chapter 26
“Let them.”

Kael didn’t argue. He just nodded and turned to go. I stopped him at the door. “I need Luke
tortured even more,” I ordered, my heart hardening. “He’s still keeping things hidden. He
should see his life slowly get taken away from him.” My hands tightened beside me. “We’re
looking for a name. See if you can get him to mention any other person Bruce might have
been working with, anybody at all, in or out the pack, only then would he be slightly spared.”
Kael nodded, disappearing from the throne room. And then there was only one other person in
the room with me. Cassian.
He’d been silent almost the time, leaning against one of the far pillars with that unreadable expression of his. When Kael was gone, he finally spoke. “You’re planning a sweep of every pack in the region,” he said. “That’s a lot of ground for one traitor.”
I turned away from him.
“Unless you’re not just looking for Bruce.”
I didn’t answer.
“You know what I think?” he said casually. “You’re hoping she’s out there. Somewhere. Still
alive.”
“Drop it.”
“You want her to be in one of those packs. That’s why you’re suddenly so generous about visiting them.”
I didn’t say a word. Just walked past him and opened the doors.
“Is that what this is, Logan?” His voice followed. “You’ve kept the mate bond buried for years. Now suddenly you’re chasing phantoms.”

I stopped just outside the door, not turning around. “Find the seer who gave me the
prophecy.”
There was a beat of silence.

“She could be dead.” He pushed.
“Then find her apprentice.”
He opened his mouth to speak but I was already gone, trying to run away from the truth of his
words.
And knowing I could only run for so long.
