Chapter 10
Sienna’s face went pale.
Adrian wanted to defend her, but the second he met my eyes, he slowly closed his mouth.
This time, he didn’t tell me to be understanding.
But that late silence couldn’t change anything.
I stood and pushed my chair back under the table.
“You don’t need to replace my gifts anymore, and you don’t need to save a fifth seat for me.”
“I won’t come back to play the Freya in your memories.”
Julian’s eyes reddened.
“Can we at least still be friends?”
I thought of all those years I’d stood behind the camera, recording their so-called friendship for them.
“No.”
The word landed, and I was calmer than I’d expected.
I walked out of the private room.
Adrian called after me.
This time, he didn’t order me to stop, and he didn’t accuse me of being unreasonable.
He just stood there, voice hoarse.
“Freya, I’m sorry.”
My steps paused for a second.
I didn’t turn around.
An apology can be heard.
But not every apology has to be accepted.
A year later, on the same full moon night, Adrian booked that restaurant again.
This time, he reserved five seats and five meals in advance.

Five cups, five sets of utensils, and five venison hand pies were on the table.
At seven that evening, the four of them arrived one after another.
The fifth chair stayed empty.
No one suggested removing it.
Over the past year, they’d sent me holiday wishes and gifts.
I hadn’t accepted any of them.
Eventually, they stopped asking when I was coming home.
Kael put the couple bracelet back in its box and never wore it again.
He went to the music festival twice.
Each time, he bought an extra ticket, but he never met anyone else willing to listen to that band with him.
Julian started handling the photos.
Because every time he raised the camera, he remembered the person who had always stood behind it and had never been asked to stay.
Adrian learned to remember everyone’s birthdays.
But every year on mine, the message he typed stayed frozen in the input box.
Sienna moved out of Maplewood Apartments too.
She started dealing with her own problems instead of assuming someone else would take care of her.
The food slowly went cold.
Adrian looked at the empty chair and finally said,
“Stop waiting.”
No one argued.
They had finally accepted the truth I wasn’t coming back.
At the same time, the Silverpine Pack was holding a celebration dinner in front of the Pack House for the first phase of the reconstruction project.
When I first returned, I was just the most ordinary junior planner on the project team.

I wore boots caked in mud, measuring aging water pipes section by section, and walked every damaged border road with the patrol team.
Three months later, the new water supply plan I submitted passed the Pack Council’s review.
Before winter, the territory finally had a stable clean water system.
By spring, the border roads had been rebuilt, and the Pack Hospital had a new emergency wing.
Evelyn promoted me from junior planner to project team lead.
Later, I began attending the Pack Council’s weekly meetings.
I hadn’t returned home and instantly stood at the top.
But every step I took, someone saw it.
Tonight, Evelyn ordered venison hand pies.
When the gift box opened, there were six in total, each with a name written on it.
I saw mine immediately.
Then the room suddenly went quiet.
Alpha Rowan walked up to me and handed me a folder stamped with the silver wolf emblem.
“This is the resolution the Pack Council passed today.”
I opened the file.
The first item formally appointed me as head of territory construction.
The second allowed me to enter the assessment list for the next Alpha candidate.
I looked up, almost certain I’d read it wrong.
Alpha Rowan watched me calmly.
“Silverpine is small, and it’s poor. But there has never been a rule here that the Alpha’s position can only go to the heir of some family.”
“When I step down, any wolf who has the pack’s recognition and the ability to protect the territory can compete for it.”
“This isn’t me handing you the Alpha’s position.”

“It’s just giving you a chance to walk there on your own.”
I looked down at my name on the document.
Freya Bennett.
No longer someone’s sister.
No longer someone’s forgotten girlfriend.
I had walked here from the bottom, step by step, and for the first time, I had the right to compete for the highest position in the pack.
I signed my name at the end of the document.
“A chance is enough.”
The wolf inside me lifted its head and let out a low response.
Someone set up a camera and called everyone over for a photo.
I instinctively moved to stand at the side, but Evelyn pulled me into the center.
“The head of territory construction still wants to hide?”
Pack members gathered around, smiling.
No one was pushed out of the frame, and no one needed an extra chair added at the last minute.
Just before the shutter clicked, my phone lit up.
Adrian sent a photo.
On a dinner table in Boston sat a venison hand pie with my name on it.
[Happy full moon.]
I looked at it for a moment and didn’t reply.
They had stayed in the prosperous, convenient human world.
I had chosen the homeland they once dismissed as poor and backward.
We were no longer on the same path.
