Chapter 6 

The company provided housing-an apartment shared with the other girls being sent overseas. 

I sniffed. No wolf scent. 

My wolf grew restless. 

No Pack. 

Being alone and separated from her kind was unbearable for her. 

But the girls were warm. “Elara, you’re finally here! We’ve been waiting!” 

They pulled me to the table and asked what I liked to eat. 

I froze. The words stuck. 

I knew what Mom and Dad liked. What Lucas and Lily liked. 

But I had no idea what I liked. 

We sat around together, talking about dreams and worries. 

Mostly, though, it was that young, fearless energy-like nothing could stop us. 

Before bed, the family group chat was buzzing again. 

Lily posted their dinner. 

“Foie gras, escargot, macarons.” 

The photos were beautifully taken, with every detail carefully considered. Mom and Dad played along, 

making funny faces for the camera. 

It looked warm. 

Lucas texted, “You guys look like you’re having so much fun. I’m stuck here eating instant pasta.” 

Mom replied immediately: “Didn’t she cook?” 

That “she” was obviously me. 

Lucas typed, “Don’t know. Probably sleeping.” 

It had been ten hours since I left. He still didn’t know I was gone.

“So lazy. She can’t even cook a meal. When she finds a mate, they’ll blame me for not raising her right.” 

Mom kept complaining, posting several messages in a row, clearly aimed at me. 

But I wasn’t the only daughter in this family. 

Lily had never cooked a single meal. She couldn’t even wash a plate properly. 

Mom never said a word about it. When Lily did the occasional chore, Dad would say, “Girls shouldn’t be too 

capable. You don’t want everything to become your job.” 

Meanwhile, I was in the kitchen, cleaning endless dishes, weeding the yard, running errands at Pack 

gatherings. 

They knew how to love. They just didn’t love me. 

No one replied to her complaints. 

Then Lily tagged me. “Elara, what perfume do you like? I’ll bring you a bottle.” 

She didn’t hold grudges easily-she had enough love to go around. She was reaching out to break the ice. 

But I didn’t reply. 

Because it wouldn’t matter either way. 

If I said thanks but no thanks, Mom would say Lily’s kindness was wasted. 

If I actually asked for something, Mom would expect me to pay for it. 

So I pretended not to see it. 

A minute later, Dad tagged me. “Your sister’s talking to you. Why aren’t you answering? And what were you 

doing with that suitcase yesterday?” 

Mom sent a sarcastic sticker. “She’s too proud to talk to you. Stop bothering her.” 

She made a few more snide comments, then the chat went quiet again. 

Just as I’d predicted. 

The next morning, after twenty-four hours of silence, Lucas messaged me. “Need me to drive you to work? I 

knocked on your door but got no answer.” 

“I’ve already left.” 

“Why so early? That insurance place doesn’t open until nine.”
