At 7:10 that night, Adrian called me. 

The phone was off. 

He frowned and tossed it onto the table. 

“She’s throwing a tantrum again.” 

The four-person set was already on the table. 

But there were five chairs around it. 

The one closest to the aisle was the extra the waiter had brought. 

Kael checked the time, irritated. 

“Give her ten more minutes. If she doesn’t show, we’re done waiting.” 

Sienna bit her straw and said quietly, 

“Is Freya mad about the music festival tickets?” 

Julian shook his head. 

“She’s not that petty.” 

None of them touched their food. 

Because every dinner before this, I was the one who confirmed the reservation, remembered everyone’s 

preferences, and reminded them who couldn’t have peanuts, who didn’t eat dairy. 

At eight, I still hadn’t shown up. 

Kael finally couldn’t sit still. He got up and headed for the door. 

“I’m going to check her dorm.” 

The dorm manager told him I’d left with my luggage that afternoon. 

“She’s not staying here anymore. She packed everything up.” 

Kael stood downstairs, his expression darkening slowly. 

The four of them went to my dorm.

Half the closet was empty. 

The computer, documents, and everyday clothes on the desk were all gone. 

But in the drawer, neatly arranged, were the things they’d given me.

my tenth birthday. 

I’d worn it for years. 

Later, when Sienna came to the Bennett house, he bought her a whole box of hair accessories. 

Nobody noticed my old hair clip again. 

Kael found the couple bracelet at the very back of the drawer. 

He gripped the chain, veins standing out on the back of his hand. 

“Where did she go?” 

No one knew. 

Julian scrolled through mutual friends’ social media. Adrian called the college advisor. Sienna sat to the 

side, texting me nonstop. 

[Freya, where are you?] 

[We’re all worried about you.] 

[Please come back.] 

Still no reply. 

Until Julian remembered that the Alpha of the Silverpine Pack had invited me back to help with territory 

reconstruction. 

They rushed to the airport. 

The last flight to Missoula had taken off twenty minutes ago. 

Kael stood outside security, calling my phone over and over. 

The mechanical voicemail recording finally made him panic. 

“How could she just leave without saying a word?”

Adrian stared at the darkened gate in the distance and didn’t answer. 

Because I’d said it.

Kael opened our chat and typed a long string of accusations. 

He deleted it all until only one line remained.

The familiar scent made my wolf stir with joy. 

Beta Evelyn Carter, who was in charge of the territory reconstruction project, came to pick me up. 

She saw my suitcase and paused. 

“That’s all you brought?” 

“It’s enough.” 

She didn’t press. She just handed me a hot coffee. 

“Rest today. You must be tired after traveling all day.” 

Her concern made my nose sting for no reason. 

So real understanding didn’t require me to prove I was fragile first.
