At 11:30 P.M., Julian came home to an empty apartment.
He was carrying a chestnut cake. He’d made a detour halfway across the city to buy it.
Walking in, he was still thinking that after being wronged today, she’d probably be sitting in the living room in silence again. He could comfort her. He could hold her. He could even break his rule and spend a belated birthday with her-three months late.
But the living room had no lights. The bedroom had no one. In the study, her laptop, her ID, her everyday jackets-all of it was gone.
Julian’s face finally changed.
Without thinking, he pulled out his phone and dialed my number.
But the voice that came through the receiver sent him straight into an abyss of ice.
