Chapter 6
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”
Julian stood in the study and didn’t move for a long, long time.
Later, his lawyer Shepherd told me that night he’d dialed my number twentyseven times. From cold fury at the start, to smashing his phone, to finally crouching in front of the desk, flipping through
the files I’d left behind, one by one.
In the study drawer were the work handover notes I’d carefully organized. His schedule for the next six months, his partners’ sensitivities, the tempers of several directors, recent risks in his fan base, the landmines that brands couldn’t touch. Even which hotels could prepare hot soup in advance because his stomach was bad-I’d written everything out clearly.
Everything, except a single word left for him.
Julian flipped all the way to the end before he saw, pressed flat at the very bottom of the drawer, an old calendar. From the year the entire internet screamed at him to get out of the entertainment
industry.
Every page was packed full with words.
[Today Julian passed his audition. He acted so calm, but at night I heard him secretly crying on the
balcony.]
[Someone said he only got by on his looks. I was so angry I couldn’t sleep the whole night. I spent three hours cutting an acting comparison video.]
[His stomach hurt, but he still couldn’t bear to buy medicine. I sold Mom’s pair of pearl earrings- enough to keep him going until he landed a role.]
The very last page, from three months ago. My birthday.
On the calendar that day, there was only one line.
[He forgot. It’s okay. Once he wins his Oscar, everything will be worth it.]
When Julian read this, his fingertips trembled uncontrollably.
The chestnut cake sat right beside him. The cream had collapsed halfway-like a compensation that arrived far too late, unable to even hold its own dignity together.

At 1 A.M., he finally got through to Shepherd on the phone. Shepherd put it on speaker. So there, i my hotel room in Iceland, I heard his voice. He sounded like he was suppressing fury, and
suppressing panic.
“Where is she?”
Shepherd was all business. “Mr. Pierce, Ms. Wright has retained me to handle all subsequent
matters. From now on, regarding assets, work, and the return of personal items, please contact me
directly.”
Julian laughed coldly. “What did she tell you? That I want a divorce?”
“Ms. Wright has not filed for divorce at this time.”
A beat of silence on the other end of the line. Julian’s breathing audibly eased.
“I knew it.” His voice lowered, as if he’d found his footing again. “She’s just angry. Shepherd-tell
her not to drag this out too long. I’ll have someone send the shawl back tomorrow. I’ll make up her
birthday, too.”
I sat by the window, staring at Iceland’s greyblue dawn sky.
Shepherd glanced at me. I shook my head.
He spoke into the phone. “Mr. Pierce, Ms. Wright is not waiting for your compensation.”
“Then what does she want?”
Shepherd was silent for two seconds. “She wants you, from now on, to stop appearing in her life.”
On the other end of the line, Julian suddenly laughed. “She said that herself?”
I didn’t make a sound.
“Put her on the phone.”
Shepherd said, “That isn’t convenient.”
Julian’s voice turned icecold in an instant. “She’s right beside you, isn’t she?”
My fingers curled softly.
The next second, I heard him pronounce, one word at a time: “Nora-I know you’re listening.”

Outside the window, wind and snow crashed against the glass. His voice traveled across ten thousand miles, still as beautiful as it was eight years ago. Only, it could no longer make my heart
soften.
“You win,” he said. “Right now, I’m terrified. I’m gutted. And I truly know you’ve been wronged. You wanted me to bow my head-I’ve bowed it. You wanted me to come find you-I will.”
He paused, his voice turning hoarse. “But don’t you use leaving to scare me. Nora-I don’t like it.”
I finally reached out and hung up the phone.
