Chapter 5
Mom worked the crowd in a deep crimson high-slit silk dress, her cheeks flushed pink with pride.
Dad drifted through his business partners, wine glass in hand, laughing a little too loud.
Bragging about his youngest to anyone who listen.
“Donde, that Catalina of yours has always been the gold standard. Now the Healer Academy? The pup’s set for life.”
The potbellied uncle raised his glass with a wide grin.
Dad tipped his head back and drained his drink.
“You flatter us. She did it all herself. We barely had to lift a finger, just gave her the best of everything.”
Mom beamed beside him, hooking her arm through Catalina’s.
“Cata, that bracelet is gorgeous. New?”
One of the aunts had a sharp eye.
Before Catalina could get a word out, Mom jumped in.
“Picked it out at the jeweler’s this afternoon. Thirty-eight hundred.”
“But whatever our Cata wants, Cata gets. What’s a little money to a mother?”
Then the ballroom doors swung open.
A cameraman shouldered his rig through the entrance.
A woman with a microphone strode in beside him.
“Excuse me, is there a Clarinda Sinclair here?”
The reporter’s voice cut clean through the room, sharp and bright through the mic.
The chatter died. Just for a beat.
Mom recovered fast, plastering on a smile and grabbing Catalina’s wrist, shoving her forward.
“Miss, there must be some mix-up.”
“Our Cata’s name is Catalina Sinclair. Incoming freshman at the Healer Academy. That’s who you’re here for, right?”
The reporter glanced down at her clipboard. Shook her head. Kept her tone polite but firm.
“Sorry, ma’am. Our station received the notice and confirmed the data. This year’s highest rank in the territory is Clarinda Sinclair. Supreme Rank. Is she here?”
“Supreme Rank?! The highest?!”
The words hit Mom and Dad like a live wire to the skull.
The whispers around them rose like a wave.
“Wait, that plain older Sinclair girl? She got the Supreme Rank?”
“Goddess, a Supreme Rank. She can walk into the Healer or Warrior Academy without breaking a sweat.”
“Hey, Donde, didn’t you say your oldest only pulled a low rank? What the hell…”

Dad’s wine glass jerked in his fingers.
A few drops of amber splashed onto the plush carpet. He didn’t even notice.
He gaped at the reporter like he’d seen a ghost.”
“M-Miss, are you sure you have the right wolf?”
“My Clarinda’s rank has always been garbage. There’s no way she pulled a Supreme Rank.”
“She can’t hold a candle to her sister. Has to be someone with the same name.”
The reporter shifted, thrown by the tension, but pulled it back together and slid a printed copy of the test report across.
Maru
“Sir, this is the official data from the Wolf Aptitude Board. There’s only one Clarinda Sinclair in this territory. Last four digits of her pack ID are right here. Take a look. Is she your daughter?”
