Chapter 6
Mom ripped the paper out of her hand..
Her eyes locked onto that blinding rank.
The familiar pack ID number. Her vision blacked out. Her knees buckled.
Real. It was real.
The daughter she’d sneered at for “barely scraping a low rank.”
The daughter she’d hammered for being less than her sister.
That daughter just topped the entire territory.
And her golden little princess?
Her precious youngest’s test result looked like a joke next to a Supreme Rank.
Worse. So much worse.
Minutes ago, she’d stood in front of hundreds of guests and announced she wished she’d only ever had the younger one.
The murmurs around her sharpened into blades.
“Can you believe this mother? Her own kid gets the highest rank and she treats her like trash?”
“She’s been stomping on the older one to prop up the little one this whole time. Bet that blew up in her face.”
Used the Supreme Ranker’s money to buy the little one a gold bracelet… Tsk. Who does that to their own kid?”
Catalina’s face went bone white. Her hand jerked behind her back, trying to hide the gold on her wrist. “N-no… that’s not possible…”
Declan stood frozen. Then he snapped.
“Clarinda couldn’t even crack the top hundred in pack training! There’s no way she got the Supreme Rank! You’ve got the wrong wolf!”
The reporter’s brow furrowed. She stared at the family like they’d lost their minds.
“Sir. The Aptitude Test doesn’t lie.”
“Clarinda Sinclair didn’t just take first in the territory. She broke our local record. A decade-long record.”
Now where is she? We need her for the interview.”
Mom’s mouth opened. Nothing came out. Her throat was packed with cotton.
Where was she?
She didn’t know. All she remembered was sending that voice message. Telling her to get a cab and sit quietly in the back.
Muttering curses under her breath about pups who forgot their place.
Shame and panic wrapped around her chest like a snake tightening its coil.
She yanked out her phone. Trembling fingers punched in the number she knew by heart.
“Your call has been forwarded to an automatic voice message system…”
She tried again.

Your call has been forwarded to an automatic voice message system…”
Text message. [Message not delivered]
That doormat of a daughter. The one who ate every insult without a word.
She’d actually blocked her.
Dad’s hands shook as he grabbed his own phone. Same result. Blocked.
Declan fired off a dozen voice messages back to back. Every single one bounced.
Red exclamation marks lined up like a slap across the screen.
The banquet hall went ice cold.
Every envious glance turned into a smirk. Every smile curdled into contempt.
The reporter shook her head, pressing her lips into a thin line. “Since she isn’t here, we’ll have to cancel. Sorry for the disturbance.”

Mom’s legs gave out. She crumpled into a chair, palms pressed hard against her face, sobs ripping loose. “What did I do to deserve this?! Clarinda, where are you…”
But this farce was over before it ever had a chance to end well.
