Chapter 317 She Was Not My Reflection
Lady Flourish
The howls from beyond the trees stopped almost as quickly as they had started.
I stayed beside Damian, watching the dark line of trees surrounding the settlement.

The wards along the walls were still glowing, but they no longer pressed against our bodies. Rhys had moved closer to Callum, while the three Dartwood warriors kept their eyes on the forest.
Amara stood a few steps away from us.
She looked completely different from the frightened woman I had expected to find. She was alert, her shoulders tense, her wolf close to the surface.
“Are they coming here?” I asked.
“They’re already close.”
Damian’s eyes shifted.
“How close?”
Amara looked at him. “Close enough that if you shift, they’ll know exactly where you are.”
His expression hardened.
I reached for his hand before he could say anything.
“Let’s not give them what they want.”
He looked at me for a moment, then his eyes returned to the trees.
Amara watched our hands.
“You really trust him.”
“I told you that.”
“I know. I’m trying to understand it.”
Her answer caught me off guard.
I turned fully toward her.

“You keep saying things about me as if you’ve known me for years.”
“I have.”
My brow furrowed.
“We’ve never met.”

“No. But I knew about you.”
She looked away briefly.
“I knew where you lived. I knew when you started showing signs of your wolf. I knew when you were old enough to shift properly.”
My stomach tightened.
“You were watching me?”
“Not me.”
“Who, then?”
“People who were protecting me.”
I glanced at Callum. He had gone quiet again.
Amara noticed.
“You don’t need to look at him every time you have a question.”
“I know.”
“You still do it.”
Callum sighed. “She’s not wrong.”
I ignored him.
“You said you weren’t my twin.”
Amara’s expression changed.
“I said I wasn’t.”
“Then what are you?”

“My sister.”
“That isn’t what I meant.”
“I know.”
She walked toward one of the old wooden benches near the wall and sat down. Her wolf remained close beneath her skin, watching every movement around her.
I stayed where I was.
“I need you to understand something before you start making assumptions,” she said. “We were not born together. We weren’t taken from the same place. We weren’t raised together. And I wasn’t created as some copy of you.”
The last part made me pause.
“I never thought you were created.”
“You were looking at me like you did.”
“I was shocked.”
“I know.”
Damian glanced between us.
Amara continued before I could respond.
“Our mother gave birth to me first. You were born later. By the time you came into the world, I was already gone.”
I stared at her.
“How much later?”
“A few years.”
That explained why she looked older.
“You remember our mother?”
“Yes.”
The answer came immediately.

“What was she like?”
Amara looked down at her hands.
“Kind. Careful. She was always afraid of saying too much when our father was around.”
My throat tightened.
That sounded like the woman I remembered.
“She loved you,” Amara said.
I looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“She told me.”
The words sat between us.

I had spent years wondering whether my mother had ever understood what happened to me, whether she had known what Garret had hidden. Now I was hearing about conversations I had never been part of.
“What did she tell you about me?”
Amara looked directly at me.
“That you were supposed to become the primary heir.”
My wolf stirred.
“Why?”
“Because your bloodline authority was stronger.”
I frowned.
“And yours?”
“Different.”
She stood again.
“My wolf carries the second vessel’s ability. Yours carries the authority that makes packs recognize the First Alpha line.”

I thought about the wolves who had lowered themselves before me. The packs that had started responding to the bloodline network. The strange way some wolves reacted whenever my aura surfaced.
“So my existence affects yours?”
“And mine affects yours.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
“How?”
Amara looked at him.
“If our wolves become fully connected, the bloodline can respond in ways neither of us can control.”
“Meaning?”
“I don’t know.”
That answer clearly irritated him.
“You’ve been living with this your whole life.”
“And I told you I don’t know.”
Her voice rose for the first time.
“I was a child when they took me away, Damian. The people protecting me knew more than I did, and most of them are dead.”
The room went quiet.
Her wolf suddenly pushed forward.
Her eyes changed.
A low growl escaped her throat.
The Dartwood warriors immediately moved.
Damian stepped in front of me.
Amara’s wolf snapped.
“Stay back.”

Her voice was no longer entirely human.
One of the warriors reached for his weapon.
“Don’t!” I said.
He stopped.
Amara’s breathing had become heavier. Her fingers curled, and her claws began to appear.
I could feel my own wolf reacting to hers.
“Easy,” I whispered.
Amara looked at me.
Her wolf stared through her eyes.
Then something strange happened.
The tension left her body.
Her claws disappeared.
She looked at me as if she couldn’t understand what had just happened.
“You stopped her,” Damian said.
Amara shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at me again.
“She stopped herself.”
My wolf moved closer.
“Blood.”
I swallowed.
“You don’t react like that with me?”
Amara shook her head.

“No.”
She looked toward Damian, and her expression hardened again.
“I don’t like him.”
Damian raised an eyebrow.
“That makes two of us.”
I turned toward him.
“Damian.”
“What?”
Amara’s wolf growled again.
I stepped between them.
“Both of you, stop.”
Damian stared at me, then stepped back.
Amara did the same.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked, “Why does your wolf hate everyone?”
“She doesn’t.”
Amara’s eyes stayed on me.
“She hates people who feel like they’re trying to control me.”
Damian looked at her.
“I wasn’t trying to control you.”
“You moved in front of her.”
“Because you were growling.”
“Because your wolf was threatening mine.”
“He was protecting Flourish.”

“I know.”
Amara’s voice softened.
“That is why she reacted.”
I looked between them.
“So your wolf only tolerates me?”
“She doesn’t just tolerate you.”
Amara took a slow breath.
“She recognizes you.”
I felt my wolf lift her head.
The words were familiar now, but hearing them from my sister made them different.
“Does that mean we’re connected?”
Amara hesitated.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Before I could ask anything else, Rhys hurried toward us.
“Flourish.”
I turned.
“What happened?”
He held up his phone.
“The wards picked up movement on the western side.”
Damian’s expression changed.
“How many?”

“Four wolves.”
Amara immediately looked toward the forest.
Then her eyes met mine.
Her wolf rose again, but this time she did not growl.
“They found us.”
I tightened my grip on Damian’s hand.
Amara stepped closer to me.
“Stay beside me.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”

“Because if they’re here for the second vessel, they won’t understand that you’re the one they should be afraid of.”
My eyebrows lifted.
“And what makes you think that?”
For the first time, Amara smiled.
“Because they don’t know what happens when both of us stand together.”
