Flourish was still staring at Garret’s signature when Rhys finished sending the archive requests.
She had ordered copies of every related record, but the confirmation on his screen did nothing to ease the anger on her face.
“I want the witnesses found,” she said. “If they’re still alive, I want to hear what happened from them directly.”
Rhys nodded. “I’ll start with the names listed in the archive index. The original document should give us more information once it arrives.”
“Good. Keep me updated.”
He gathered his tablet and left us in the office. The guards outside had returned to their posts, although I could hear them exchanging short updates through the mind link.
The whole estate had been on alert since the records revealed that someone had taken an interest in Amara again.
Flourish closed the file, then opened it once more.
I watched her read the signature section. She had been angry when we first found it, but now she looked exhausted.
Her father had survived surgery, yet his condition meant he might never be able to answer the questions she needed to ask him.
Even if he could speak, there was no guarantee he would tell her the truth.
“You should sit down for a while,” I told her.
“I’ve been sitting.”
“You know what I mean.”
She
gave me a tired look. “Damian, please don’t start treating me like I’m about to break.”
“I’m not.” I pulled out the chair beside hers and sat down. “I’m asking you to take a breath before you give yourself another task.”
“I can’t just leave this alone. Amara was taken from our family, and Garret signed the on stop now, who is going to find out what happened to her?”

“We’ll find out.”
“You say that as if it’s simple.”
“It isn’t.” I leaned forward, resting my forearms on my knees. “But you don’t have to solve everything tonight.”
She turned toward me. “What if he knew she was alive all these years? What if he knew where she was and chose not to tell me?”
“I don’t know what he knew.”
“Neither do I. That’s the problem.”
Her voice rose at the end, and she stood abruptly. She walked to the window, folded her arms, then let them fall to her sides.
I could hear her wolf moving restlessly beneath her skin. The scent of her anger had grown stronger, and my own wolf was responding to it.
“Mine,” he muttered inside my head, protective and alert.
I kept my wolf under control. Flourish did not need another Alpha reacting to her distress as though she had lost command of herself.
She pressed her fingers against the window frame. “I spent years thinking I was the one who had failed this family. I thought I had forgotten things because I was careless, or because I didn’t pay enough attention when my mother was still around. Now every record tells me someone made decisions about my life before I was old enough to understand them.”
I got up and crossed the room, stopping beside her.
“You were a child,” I said. “Whatever happened, you weren’t responsible for decisions the adults made.”
“That doesn’t change what happened to Amara.”
“No, it doesn’t. And I’m not asking you to forgive Garret or pretend his signature means nothing.” I waited until she looked at me. “But whatever your father did, you don’t have to become the person who fixes every wrong committed by your family. You can find out the truth without taking responsibility for every choice they made.”
She looked away again. For a moment, I thought she would argue. Instead, she lowered hersel onto the window seat and rubbed her palms over her face.
“What am I supposed to do with all this anger?” she asked.

“Feel it. Be angry with him if that’s what you feel. Ask every question you need to ask. Just don’t turn his decisions into a punishment for yourself.”
She dropped her hands. “You make it sound easier than it is.”
“I know it isn’t easy.” I sat beside her, leaving enough room for her to move away if she wanted. “I can’t change what Garret signed. I can help you find out why he signed it, who carried out the order, and where Amara went afterward. Those are things we can work on together.”
Flourish studied my face. “And if the answers are worse than we expect?”
“Then we deal with them when we have them.”
She leaned against my shoulder. I slipped an arm around her and kissed the top of her head.
She did not say anything for a while, and I let the silence remain. The bond between us had carried her fear and anger into me all morning, but I knew better than to assume I understood every part of what she was feeling.
“I don’t want to become like them,” she said at last.
“You won’t have to make that decision today.”
“I’m serious, Damian.”
“So am I.” I turned slightly toward her. “Your family’s past doesn’t decide what kind of person you become. You do. And you don’t have to prove anything to anyone by carrying all of it alone.”
Her fingers closed around mine. The tension in her shoulders eased a little, and she rested her head against me again.
For the first time since Rhys had restored the document, she stopped looking toward the office desk.
Then a sharp pulse travelled through the pack wards.
I felt it through my bond with the estate before the warning reached my mind. Every wolf guard reacted at once.
Claws struck the floor outside, followed by a burst of voices over the mind link.
Flourish sat upright. Her head turned toward the grounds, and her expression changed.
“What is it?” I asked.

She did not answer immediately. Her nostrils flared as she drew in a breath, trying to separate the scents carried through the wards from the familiar smells of the estate.
A second pulse passed through the boundary, weaker but closer. My wolf raised his head, and I felt the warning in his growl.
Flourish gripped my hand.
“Someone is out there,” she whispered. “Amara can sense them watching the estate from beyond the wards.”
