Chapter 118 Zero
Chloe had changed into a much more elegant, conservative dress.
Specifically…
One she knew Eleanor would approve of.
An extra chair had been added to the dining table for Ares.
Finished
When Chloe saw him sitting beside Iris, she deliberately chose the seat directly across from him. That way… whenever he looked up, he would see her first.
“Chloe.” Eleanor noticed something. “Did you redo your makeup tonight?”
Chloe had already prepared her answer. “I learned a new makeup look today. I wanted to practice. I just happened to finish before Mr. Barclay arrived.”
Eleanor thought nothing of it. Chloe had always loved beauty treatments. She’d spent plenty of money learning makeup techniques over the years.
Throughout dinner, Chloe was unusually lively. She chatted constantly with Richard and Eleanor. Every so often she tried to draw Ares into conversation.
But Ares was far too perceptive. No matter what topic she brought up… he somehow steered the conversation back to Iris.
“Maybe after spending more time with Ares…” Eleanor laughed. “Iris won’t be so quiet anymore.”
The more she watched the two of them together…
The more perfect they seemed.
Across the table, Chloe watched as Ares patiently picked every tiny bone from the fish before dipping the tender meat into the broth and placing it onto Iris’s plate.
Jealousy nearly drove her insane.
A few days earlier, Emily Wolfe had reached out to her.
“I know you and Iris don’t get along. Let’s work together. You help me win Ares back, and I’ll help you get rid of Iris.”
Chloe had rejected the offer without a second thought.

“Do you really need someone else’s help to steal a man?”
“Miss Wolfe,” she had said coolly, “I think we’d be better off competing fairly.”
After all…
She wanted Ares too.
Why couldn’t she achieve both goals on her own?
Why should she rely on anyone else?
Ares would be visiting the Noir Residence more and more often in the future.
She would have far more chances to see him than Emily ever would.
As for Iris…
Sooner or later….
She would expose her true colors in front of Ares.

“Oh, right.” Richard suddenly remembered something. “Stellar Venture sent us invitations to their second anniversary celebration. Your mother and I won’t be going, so Iris can attend with Ares.”
He turned to Ares with a smile.
“Take her out and let her enjoy herself.”
For established corporations like the Noirs, celebrations hosted by newer companies such as Stellar Venture were usually attended by the younger generation.
The senior executives rarely appeared in person.
Ares readily agreed.
“Of course. I’ll take care of Iris’s evening gown.”
The Barclay family had also received invitations.
Originally, they had planned to send one of the younger relatives instead.
But if Iris was attending….
Then Ares was going too.

Seeing her parents in such high spirits, Chloe seized the opportunity.
“Mom, Dad… I haven’t attended a banquet in a long time. Can I come too?”
Finished
“Of course.” Richard smiled. “They sent several invitations anyway. It’s not a formal business function. Just a celebration.”
After dinner…
Richard and Eleanor went out into the garden for an evening walk.
Iris headed upstairs to change her clothes.
Ares waited outside her room.
Chloe spotted the opportunity.
Carrying a plate of desserts, she walked upstairs.
“Mr. Barclay… would you like something sweet while you wait?”
“Thank you.” He smiled politely. “But I’m full.”
She hesitated before speaking again.
“Don’t you think my sister can be a little… dense when it comes to relationships?”
The implication behind her words couldn’t have been more obvious.
“When you’re choosing a wife, shouldn’t you look for someone gentle and obedient? Especially if she’s going to become Mrs. Barclay.”
She lowered her eyes with a faint smile.
“My sister may be breathtaking at first, but once you get to know her…” She paused before finishing softly, “…you’ll probably find her rather boring.”
Ares looked at her, then asked quietly, “And are you gentle and obedient?”
A shy smile appeared on Chloe’s face.
“Sometimes.”
“And sometimes…”
“I’m a little bolder.”

Summoning her courage, she took a step closer.
When he didn’t immediately move away, a flash of excitement lit up her eyes.
So he does have some feelings for me after all.’
Slowly, she reached for his hand.
Finished
The instant her fingers were about to touch his hand, Ares stepped straight into Iris’s room instead.
Iris had just finished changing. The moment she saw him walk in, she instinctively took a step
back.
“Why did you come in?”
Ares smiled apologetically. “Your door wasn’t locked. Your sister almost grabbed my hand just now, so I came in here to avoid any misunderstandings.”
As he spoke, he reached back and quietly closed the door.
Outside, Chloe finally realized she’d been played.
It wasn’t that he had feelings for her at all. He had simply wanted an excuse to enter Iris’s room -and had used her to do it.
No man had ever ignored her like this before.
Fuming, Chloe stormed back to her room, pulled out her phone, and sent a message to Emily.
Emily seemed to have expected Chloe to contact her and replied almost immediately.

[I knew you’d come to me, Miss Noir. Ares isn’t someone who’s easy to win over.]</ blockquote>
[Hmph. Don’t am.]
get too smug. You still need to work with me, so you’re not any better off than I
Deep down, Chloe looked down on Emily. If Emily hadn’t grown up alongside Ares and known him better than anyone else, Chloe wouldn’t have bothered saying another word to her.

[Then how about we meet tomorrow? I’ll tell you about Ares, and you can tell me about your sister.]

[No problem. You pick the time and place. Just don’t choose somewhere cheap.]
After setting down her phone, Emily’s eyes filled with disgust.

If she had any other way to get close to Iris, she never would have gone to Chloe. Unfortunately, the Wolfe family had been pressuring her relentlessly…

Meanwhile, Ares had already settled into Iris’s room.
Since Iris didn’t ask him to leave, Ares made himself comfortable and looked around the room.
“Your bedroom is beautifully decorated.”
Iris took it as a compliment. After all, Richard had bought the interior design plans from her in the first place.
The desk was covered with loose draft papers she hadn’t had time to put away, and several crumpled sheets lay scattered across the floor.
“I haven’t gotten around to cleaning up yet,” she said awkwardly when she saw him reaching for one of the paper balls.
Ares casually unfolded one of the wrinkled sheets.
It was filled with chemical equations-but far beyond the level of high school chemistry.
“You’re pretty impressive, Iris.”
Iris brushed it off casually. “I just happen to be interested.”
Those crumpled pages were calculations that had errors or hadn’t worked out, so she’d balled them and tossed them aside. The completed calculations lay neatly spread across the desk.
up
Ares picked up the top sheet.
Unlike the others, this one was carefully written, almost like a finalized copy.
In the lower-right corner was a bold signature.
Zero.
The hand holding the paper paused ever so slightly before returning to normal.
“So your name is Zero?”
