I kept the report open while Damian read the results over my shoulder.
The second scent beneath the sample had not been identified, and Rhys had noted that the laboratory needed more material before it could offer a reliable match.
“We’ll have to wait for the next report,” I said, closing the file.
Damian nodded, but he didn’t return to his desk. He remained beside me, holding my hand from our earlier conversation.
“Flourish, I owe you an apology.”
I turned to face him. His expression was serious, and he wasn’t looking for a way to change the subject.
“I shouldn’t have dismissed what you were telling me,” he continued. “You were trying to help me make the right decision, and I treated your concerns like an obstacle. You shouldn’t have had to argue with me just to be heard.”
I hadn’t expected him to say it so plainly. During our disagreement, I had been prepared to defend every point until he understood why I was upset.
Now that he was offering an apology without trying to justify his actions, I needed a moment to respond.
“Thank you,” I said. “I appreciate you saying that.”
“I mean it. I can’t promise I won’t get angry when someone threatens you or this pack. But I can promise to listen before I make decisions that affect both of us.”

I lowered my eyes to our joined hands. “I need that from you, Damian. I don’t expect you to stop worrying about me. I just don’t want you to confuse loving me with having to make every decision for me.”
“I understand.”
He waited, and I knew he was giving me room to speak. I had spent so much time explaining what he had done wrong that I hadn’t thought much about my part in our disagreement.
“I owe you an apology too,” I admitted.
His brows drew together. “For what?”
“For the way I shut you out whenever I think you might try to control a situation. I keep insisting that I can handle everything myself, and sometimes I don’t tell you what I’m feeling until I’m already angry.”
He started to respond, but I continued before I lost my nerve.
“When Amara came into our lives, everything became more complicated. I had questions about my family, the bloodline, and what my father had done. I was trying to understand all of it while dealing with the danger around us. I didn’t want to become someone who needed to be protected, so I kept pushing myself to prove I could manage everything.”
“You don’t have to prove that to me.”
“I know that now. Or at least, I’m trying to accept it.” I looked directly at him. “Sometimes I use my independence as a shield. If I don’t let anyone close enough to help, I don’t have to worry about disappointing them or losing control. But I can’t keep doing that with you and expect us to work
as a team.”
Damian lifted my hand and pressed a kiss to my fingers.

“You’ve never disappointed me by needing help,” he said. “And I don’t want you to think you have to face everything alone just because you can.”
“I don’t want you carrying everything alone either.”
He drew me closer, giving me time to move away if I wanted to. I stepped into his arms and rested my head against his chest. His arms went around me, and I held him tightly.
For several days, our conversations had been filled with investigations, security reports, and the danger surrounding Amara.
Even when we were together, part of my attention had remained on the next problem waiting for us.
I had missed being able to stand beside my mate without feeling that we needed to settle something between us first.
“I love you,” Damian said quietly.
“I love you too.”
He kissed my forehead, then rested his cheek against my hair. We stayed that way for a while, neither of us rushing to speak.
My wolf had been restless since Amara arrived. Her presence had brought questions about our bloodline and the strange connection between the sisters, and the tension surrounding us had affected the bond Damian and I shared. Even when we were close, our wolves had remained alert, reacting to every change around us.
Now, as Damian held me, I felt my wolf ease her guard.
“He’s ours,” she murmured.

“And you’re his,” I answered silently.

His wolf responded through our bond. I couldn’t hear actual words, but I
felt his attention turn toward mine, followed by a calm acceptance I hadn’t felt from them in days.
Damian drew back enough to look at me. “Your wolf feels different.”
“So does yours.”
He placed his forehead against mine. Our wolves moved closer through the bond, no longer reacting to each other with the tension that had followed Amara’s arrival.
They settled together, allowing us a moment of quiet without either of them pressing for action.
I closed my eyes and held on to him.
We still had an unknown scent to identify, inactive pack systems to investigate, and an enemy whose reach we had yet to understand.
Our problems had not disappeared because we had apologized, and neither of us could promise that we would never disagree again.
But Damian had listened, and I had admitted where I had been wrong. We had both chosen to make room for the other instead of insisting on handling everything alone.
When I finally lifted my head, he brushed a strand of hair away from my face.
“Whatever comes next,” he said, “we face it together.”
I squeezed his hand. “Together. But no making decisions for me.”

He gave a short laugh. “I’ll remember.”
“You’d better.”
I kissed him, and this time, neither of us was in a hurry to pull away.
