Chapter 350 The Alpha Who Stayed
Lady Flourish POV
I woke sometime after midnight with Damian’s hand wrapped around mine.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t remember falling asleep.

The room was dark except for the lamp beside the bed, and a glass of water sat on the table within reach.
My head still hurt, though the fever seemed less severe than it had been earlier.
I tried to move my fingers, and Damian immediately lifted his head from the chair beside me.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I was just checking if you were awake.”
He rubbed his face and leaned forward to touch my forehead. His hair was untidy, and the sleeves of his shirt were rolled up.
He hadn’t changed into his nightclothes.
“You’re cooler,” he said.
“Have you been sitting there all night?”
“Most of it.”
I looked at the chair, then at the clock. “Damian, you could have slept in your own bed.”
“And leave you here alone when your wolf still isn’t responding properly?”
“I wasn’t going anywhere.”
“You tried to shift this morning and nearly collapsed.”
I wanted to remind him that the physician had been checking on me and that I wasn’t a child who needed someone watching her every minute.
However, the words sounded unreasonable even before I spoke them.
Damian had already spent hours managing the calls I had left unfinished, and now he was sacrificing his sleep to stay beside me.

“Did the physician come back?” I asked.

“Yes. He checked your temperature and reviewed the first results. You’re dehydrated and badly exhausted. He’s monitoring you, and he’ll run more tests in the morning if your wolf hasn’t recovered enough.”
“Did he say why I couldn’t shift?”
“He hasn’t found a definite cause yet. He wants you to rest before trying anything else.”
I swallowed, disappointed by the lack of an answer. I could handle being tired. I could accept needing a few days away from F-Tech, even if I hated it.
But the thought of losing control over my wolf frightened me in a way I hadn’t admitted to
Damian.
He seemed to notice my silence.
“We’ll deal with it when we know more,” he said. “You don’t have to figure everything out tonight.”
I nodded and reached for the water. He helped me sit up, keeping one arm behind my back while I drank. When I finished, he adjusted the pillows and made sure I was comfortable before returning to his chair.
“Come here,” I said.
He glanced at me. “What?”
“There’s space beside me. You don’t need to sleep in that chair.”
“I’m fine here.”
“Your back will disagree with you in the morning.”
That earned a tired smile. He removed his shoes and lay down beside me on top of the covers, careful not to disturb me.
I moved closer until my head rested against his chest, and his arm settled around my waist.
For a while, neither of us spoke. I listened to his breathing and felt his wolf’s presence through our mate bond.
My own wolf remained quiet, and when I tried to reach her, I received only a weak response.
‘Rest, she murmured.

It was the first clear word I had sensed from her since the failed shift.
I relaxed against Damian and let my eyes close.

When I woke again, the pale morning light had entered the room.
Damian was still beside me, though he had shifted onto his back. One hand rested near my waist, and his breathing was slow and even.
I turned carefully, intending to get a better look at him without waking him.
Then I felt his wolf was close to mine through our bond, keeping watch without pushing into
my space.
I could sense his presence more clearly than I had the previous night, and my own wolf had moved toward it.
She seemed less withdrawn, responding to his warmth and familiar scent.
I closed my eyes and reached for her again.
This time, she answered.
‘He’s here.’
“I know,” I whispered.
Her response was weak, but it was there. I could feel her moving inside me, no longer struggling against the exhaustion that had kept her quiet.
When I shifted my fingers against the blanket, she followed the movement with a small burst of
energy.
I didn’t attempt a full shift. The physician had been clear about that, and I wasn’t interested in repeating yesterday’s experience.
Still, the improvement gave me enough relief that I had to blink away the tears gathering in my
eyes.
Damian stirred beside me.
“What is it?”
“My wolf responded.”

He sat up at once. “You felt her?”
I nodded. “She’s still tired, but I can reach her again.”

He placed his palm against my cheek, and his wolf responded through our bond. I felt the change in him, the immediate concern that eased when I told him I wasn’t in pain.
“Don’t try shifting yet,” he said. “We’ll tell the physician when he comes.”
“I won’t.”
He searched my face for a moment before pulling me into his arms. I held him tightly, pressing my face against his neck.
His scent was familiar, and being close to him made it easier to stop worrying about what I needed to do next.
“I hate that you had to spend the night looking after me,” I admitted.
“Why?”
“Because you’re an Alpha. You have responsibilities, and I know you’ve been handling my work too.”
“I’m also your husband.” He drew back enough to look at me. “I don’t measure my responsibilities by how many people need me outside this room. Sometimes, the needs me most is right here.”

I lowered my eyes. I had spent so long believing I needed to remain capable, useful, and ready for whatever came next that accepting help felt uncomfortable.
Even with Damian, I had treated my exhaustion as a problem to hide until I could fix it myself.
“I don’t always know how to stop,” I confessed. “When I think about those packs waiting for help, I feel guilty taking time for myself.”
“Then we’ll work on that.” He brushed a loose strand of hair away from my face. “You can care about them without destroying yourself in the process.”
I rested my forehead against his. “You make it sound easy.”
“I didn’t say it would be easy.”
A quiet laugh escaped me, and he kissed my forehead before settling back against the pillows.
When the physician arrived later that morning, Damian called him over and explained that I could sense my wolf again.

The physician checked my condition and reminded us that I still needed rest and further monitoring before attempting a shift.
For once, I didn’t argue.
After he left, Damian returned to bed and opened his arms.
I settled against him, allowing myself to be cared for without turning it into another task I needed to complete.
I still had work waiting for me, and the international network wasn’t going to build itself. But my wolf was responding again, and Damian was beside me.
For that morning, I let that be enough.
