Lady Flourish POV

By the time the physician let me leave my bed for short stretches, I had already checked three messages from Rhys and read the latest update from the overseas pack.
Damian had gone to Dartwood that morning over a patrol dispute near the eastern border.
He’d made me promise to follow the physician’s instructions before he left, and I had, because I genuinely felt better.
My fever had dropped, my wolf answered more often, and I could cross the room without my legs giving out.
That didn’t mean I was ready for my usual schedule. I knew it, even if I didn’t care to admit it.
I settled into the sitting room with my laptop to review the international emergency network proposal.
Rhys had sent a revised list of overseas contacts, and several entries needed verifying.
I had barely finished the first page when a sharp pressure moved through my chest.
I froze.
The bloodline mark beneath my collarbone was warming.
It wasn’t painful at first, but within seconds the heat spread until I had to pull my collar aside to look. Something was setting it off.
I called Rhys. “Are you seeing anything unusual on the network?”
“Actually, yes. A bloodline flare just came through one of the old channels. It’s coming from the Stonehedge side, but we haven’t identified the source.”
“Is it connected to the overseas pack?”
“We’re checking. It’s too strong to be routine, and the archive is responding to it.”
I stood to reach the wall display. My legs held, though the room tilted and I gripped the table until it passed. “Don’t send anyone into the affected area until we know what triggered it. Have the team isolate the signal and check whether it’s from a registered bloodline channel.”
Several inactive entries had changed status on the dashboard, but the system couldn’t say whether someone was trying to reach us or an outside force was interfering.

My phone rang. Damian.
“What’s happening at Stonehedge?”
“How did you hear about the flare?”
“The pack wards registered it. The border team reported a surge and the alert reached Dartwood. Are you all right?”
“I’m fine. We’re investigating.”
“Flourish, I asked if you’re all right.”
“I’m standing, Damian. I haven’t attempted a shift, and I’m following the physician’s instructions.”
“Stay where you are. I’m coming.”
“You have a border dispute to handle. Don’t leave your territory because my mark reacted to something.”
“We’ll discuss it when I get there.”
He hung up before I could answer.
The mark warmed again, briefly this time, followed by a faint tug through the bond. He had felt it too.
Still, I wasn’t helpless. Rhys was checking the records, security was watching the estate, and I could handle an investigation without my husband rushing across territories to stand over me.
At least, that was what I told myself until the guards announced him.
Damian came in with his jacket unbuttoned and his phone in hand.
His Alpha presence filled the room before he spoke, and the guards outside straightened.
He looked at me, then at the open laptop and the reports spread across the table.
“You said you were resting.”
“I am. I’m sitting down.”
“You’re working.”
“I’m reviewing information, not running around the estate.”

“I left Dartwood because an alert said the bloodline network had activated near Stonehedge. I get here and find you on your laptop after the physician told you to limit your activity.”
“You didn’t have to come.”
“You think I crossed the territory to inspect your work?”
“I think you have responsibilities. You can’t keep dropping them every time something happens to me.”
“And you can’t keep acting like your health is the least important thing in the room.”
His voice rose, and mine followed. “You don’t understand how much there is to do! An overseas pack is asking for evacuation, dormant channels are activating, and incomplete records could leave other packs without help. I can’t just ignore it.”
“I never asked you to. I asked you to stop pushing yourself while you recover.”
“Then why not trust me to handle it?”
“Because I felt your distress through our bond, Flourish!”
That stopped me.
He looked away and ran a hand over his face. “The flare was strong enough to reach Dartwood. I couldn’t tell whether you were hurt. My Beta could handle the border, but I couldn’t sit there waiting for someone to tell me my mate was safe.”
I had been so focused on the disruption that I hadn’t thought about how it felt on his end.
He’d been far away, unable to see me, with only an alarm and the bond to tell him something
was wrong.
“I didn’t know you felt it that strongly.”
I closed the laptop. When I tried to stand, fatigue hit and I grabbed the table. Damian was at my side at once.
“That’s enough.” He eased me back into the chair.
This time I didn’t argue. The flare had taken more out of me than I wanted to admit, and my wolf had gone quiet again.
“Did the physician say when I can go back to work?”
“He said you need more rest and further checks before you attempt a shift. He did not give you

I reached for his hand. “I’m sorry I made you worry.”
He squeezed my fingers. “And I’m sorry I came in ready to argue before asking what you needed.”
“Can we agree that you’ll let Dartwood’s team handle things when they’re capable, and I’ll stop pretending I can do everything while I’m ill?”
“Provided you keep your side.”
“I will.”
He helped me to the bedroom and settled beside me while Rhys kept investigating.
I told him he could take any urgent calls until the physician cleared me.
The signal was still unexplained, but for now I put my phone aside, lay down next to my mate, and rested.
