By the time the physician allowed me to resume light activities, Damian had already decided I would spend most of my time at the estate.
He called it a reasonable recovery plan. I called it too much confidence in his ability to manage my life, but I kept that to myself.
I had agreed to follow his instructions, and my wolf was responding better, even if I still tired faster than usual.
Amara was struggling in a different way.
She had chosen to stay with me, but the estate was full of routines she had never known.
Pack members greeted her in the corridors, staff kept asking what she needed, and guards bowed whenever Damian passed.
She understood this was my home. She just hadn’t found her place in it yet.
I noticed at breakfast. She sat across from me, barely touching her food. When a staff member offered more tea, she looked at me before answering.
“No, thank you.”
The woman smiled and left. Amara watched her go, then looked down at her plate.
“You can ask for whatever you need here,” I told her.
“I know.”
“You don’t have to check with me first.”
“I wasn’t checking with you.”
I let it go.
Afterward she followed me toward the sitting room, then stopped when two young wolves crossed the corridor. They greeted me, nodded to her, and carried on toward the training grounds.
“Do they know who I am?” she asked once they were gone.
“Some know you’re staying with us. A few know about the bloodline connection, but I haven’t

“Do they think I’m important?”

That caught me off guard. “Why would you ask that?”

“They keep looking at me. And everyone knows where they’re supposed to go except me.”
I wanted her to understand she didn’t have to earn her place, but I knew that telling her she belonged wouldn’t make the unfamiliar faces any easier. “Take your time. You don’t have to attend every gathering or learn everything in one day.”
She nodded, though she still looked unsure.
Later that morning I found Cheryl in the kitchen, going over a list of household supplies with one of the staff. She asked whether Amara had settled in.
“She’s trying. I think she’s overwhelmed by how many people she has to meet.”
“Would she like some company that has nothing to do with bloodline records or family history?”
I almost laughed. “Probably.”
“Then I’ll ask her.”
That afternoon I found them in the garden with a tray of fruit and two glasses of juice, arguing over how much pepper belonged in a proper stew.
Amara was laughing. She stopped when she saw me, as if she had been caught at something, but Cheryl kept eating her apple slice.
“Flourish, your sister thinks everyone in this house is trying to feed her enough for three wolves.”
“That’s not what I said,” Amara protested.
“You said the portions were too large.”
“They are.”
“Then we’ll find you smaller plates.”
Amara laughed again, and this time she didn’t glance at me first.
I sat down and asked what else I had missed. Amara admitted she had offered to help with lunch and nearly ruined a batch of dough.

“I know a few things. I just didn’t understand what she meant by letting the dough rest.”
“So I told her to show you instead,” Cheryl said. “You’re allowed to learn.”
Amara hid a smile behind her glass. It was a relief to watch her talk freely, without worrying whether her answers would disappoint me. For the first time since she arrived, she was interested in something that had nothing to do with her missing memories or the reason Garret had separated us.
Over the next few days Cheryl kept making time for her, introducing people slowly and never forcing her to attend gatherings or explain who she was.
Amara started asking questions of her own about which rooms she could use and whether she could leave the inner garden without an escort.
She still disliked the way some wolves lowered their heads when Damian entered a room, but she was learning that pack customs didn’t always mean someone expected obedience from her.
One afternoon I found her waiting by the entrance with Cheryl.
“Where are you two going?”
“The market,” Cheryl said. “Amara wants to see the town.”
Amara turned to me. “Is that allowed?”
I frowned. “You don’t need my permission. Just tell the guards where you’re going so they know you’re safe.”
She seemed surprised. Cheryl offered her arm, and after a brief hesitation, Amara took it.
“Bring me something back,” I called.
“What do you want?”
“Anything you think I’ll like.”
She considered that. “I’ll see what I find.”
I watched them go. Nobody was telling Amara what she was supposed to become. She was simply going out with a friend.
That evening she came back with a bag of pastries and set it on the table before sitting beside Cheryl.

“They were still warm when we bought them. Cheryl said you’d like these.”
“I do. Thank you.”
She told me about the market, a quarrel over the price of a scarf, and a stall owner who insisted every customer buy something extra. I let her talk.
Later I told Damian how much easier Amara seemed around Cheryl.
“Good. She needs people who know her as a person, not as part of the bloodline network.”
I agreed. The questions about her past hadn’t gone away, but she was beginning to build a life
here on her own terms.
The next morning I heard her laughing with Cheryl before I reached the dining room.
They were arguing over whether the market pastries beat the ones from our kitchen. I paused in the doorway, then walked in and joined them.
