Amara was still laughing with Cheryl when I left the dining room, carrying the empty plates toward the kitchen.
I had barely reached the hallway when one of the estate guards informed me that an elderly healer had arrived and requested a private conversation.
I recognized the name he gave me. Healer Merek had served several generations of our family and had worked with the High Healer Council long before Elder Darego took his current position.
He rarely visited the estate without a reason, so I asked the guard to bring him to my study.
Merek entered with a wooden walking stick in one hand and a leather bag over his shoulder. His hair had turned completely white, but his eyes were clear, and he refused the chair I offered until he had greeted me properly.
“I heard about the bloodline test you conducted with your sister,” he said.
“Elder Darego informed you?”
“He asked me to review some old records. I found information that I believe you should hear before another test is considered.”
I gestured for him to sit. “What information?”
He placed his bag on the table and removed a thin folder filled with handwritten notes.
Some of the pages were so old that the ink had faded, but the symbols along the margins were familiar from the records we had already examined.
“Your bloodline has never followed ordinary inheritance patterns,” he explained. “Most werewolves inherit their strength, senses, and shifting ability through a combination of their parents’ traits. The First Alpha bloodline can behave differently, particularly when it passes through a child.”
I looked through the pages without touching them. “Different how?”
“We cannot predict every possibility. Some children from earlier generations developed unusually strong senses. Others shifted earlier than expected, struggled to control their wolves, or reacted to bloodline energy before they understood what they were feeling.”
I raised my eyes to his face. “Are you saying my children could have those traits?”

“If you have children, they could inherit some of them. They might also inherit none. The records are incomplete, and several accounts contradict each other.”
His answer did not ease my concern. “Then why tell me now?”
“Because the recent test with Amara produced a response that the surviving records describe only in rare cases. Your connection may be stronger than the healers who studied your family understood.” He tapped the folder. “If your bloodline is passed to another generation, we should not assume the child will develop like an ordinary werewolf.”
I thought of the test room, the sudden rise in the readings, and the way Amara and I had partially shifted when our hands touched. We had barely begun to understand what happened between us, and now I was being asked to consider what it might mean for a child who did not yet exist.
“Can the traits harm them?”
“They could make early development difficult, especially if the child experiences changes they cannot control. But I will not tell you that harm is certain when the records cannot support that conclusion.” Merek closed the folder. “The responsible thing is to study the bloodline further before making assumptions.”
I asked him to leave a copy of the notes with me. He agreed, then reminded me that no one should attempt to activate the network through a child or use a child’s blood to test its limits.
I had not suggested anything of the sort, but I understood why he wanted the warning made
clear.
After he left, I remained at my desk, reading the same two pages without taking in much of their contents.
Damian found me there later that afternoon. He had come from Dartwood to discuss the latest security reports, but he stopped when he noticed the folder beside my laptop.
“What happened?”
I told him about Merek’s visit and explained what the old records suggested. Damian listened without interrupting, his attention fixed on me rather than the papers.
When I finished, he pulled out the chair opposite mine and sat down.
“Have you ever thought about having children?” he asked.
The question caught me off guard. “That is what you took from all this?”
“No. I heard the part about the risks, Flourish.” He paused and rubbed his thumb over the edge

of the table. “I also heard him say we cannot know what our children might inherit. It made me realize we have never actually talked about whether we want a family.”
I had expected him to focus on protecting the bloodline or finding another healer to examine the records. Instead, he was asking about children as though the possibility belonged to us, not to the family history we had spent months trying to understand.
“I haven’t made plans,” I admitted. “There has been too much happening, and I don’t know what pregnancy would mean for my health or the bloodline.”
“Neither do I.”
His answer was so direct that I studied his face. Damian had always been certain when discussing pack duties, security, or decisions that needed to be made. This was different, and he did not try to hide that he had no clear answer.
“Would you want children with me?” I asked.
“Yes.” He gave the answer without hesitation, then looked down at the folder. “But wanting them doesn’t mean we should start trying without understanding the risks. I won’t ask you to carry a child just because I want a family.”
I reached across the table and took his hand. “I don’t want us to make decisions out of fear, either.”
“Then we won’t.” He turned his hand to hold mine properly. “We’ll learn what we can, and we’ll decide when we’re ready. There’s no deadline.”
For a while, neither of us spoke. I had imagined discussing children someday, perhaps when the bloodline mystery was behind us and our lives no longer depended on the next emergency.
I had not expected the conversation to begin with a warning about traits our children might inherit.
Damian lifted my hand and kissed my knuckles before letting me go. “For what it’s worth, I can picture it,” he said quietly. “You and me with a child running around the estate, probably ignoring every rule we give them.”
I laughed despite myself. “Your child would be the one teaching mine how to break the rules.”
“Our child,” he corrected.
The words made me smile, but I did not pretend they settled anything.
We still had records to examine, questions to ask, and a bloodline neither of us fully understood.

I drew the folder closer and opened it again. This time, Damian stayed beside me while I read.
