I stayed beside Flourish while she read through the healer’s notes, though neither of us spoke much after our conversation.
Every few minutes, she returned to a page she had already examined, checking the same details as if another reading might produce a different answer.
I understood why. Our bloodline carried enough unanswered questions without adding the possibility that our children might inherit traits no healer could predict.
My wolf had been quiet since Merek left, but the thought of a child of ours growing up under the same pressure Flourish had faced bothered me more than I wanted to admit.
“You’re reading that page for the third time,” I told her.
She glanced at me. “And you’re watching me instead of reading yours.”
“I finished mine.”
“Then you can make yourself useful and get me something to drink.”
I laughed, took the folder from her before she could object, and went to the side table for water. When I returned, she had closed her laptop and was rubbing her forehead.
“You should rest,” I said.
“Don’t start.”
“I’m not starting anything. I’m asking you to take a break.”
She accepted the glass and drank. I sat beside her again, close enough that our arms touched, and let her finish before I spoke.
“Merek’s warning made me think about something,” I said. “Something I haven’t told you properly.”
She turned toward me. “What is it?”
I had faced hostile Alphas, challenged decisions made by the council, and taken responsibility for an entire pack. None of those things had prepared me for explaining what I wanted from a future that was still uncertain.
“I want children with you someday.”

Flourish watched me without answering immediately. I could feel my wolf paying attention through our bond, but I kept my eyes on her.
“I know we aren’t ready,” I continued. “I’m not asking you to make plans now, and I don’t want us to rush because we’re worried about what the healer found. But I want you to know that when I think about our future, I include children in it.”
Her expression softened. “You really have thought about this.”
“More than I expected to.”
I had imagined a child with my eyes or Flourish’s stubbornness, perhaps a young wolf who would run through the estate and make our guards regret accepting their assignments.
Those thoughts were easy to entertain until I considered what our family name and bloodline might mean to that child.
“I don’t want them growing up as political tools,” I said. “I won’t have the council measuring their strength before they’ve learned to control their wolves. I won’t let packs argue over who gets to train them, or have people treat them as the next answer to every problem our bloodline creates.”
Flourish put her glass down. “You think they would do that?”
“I know people would try.”
Our positions alone would attract attention. Add her First Alpha bloodline to the fact that our child would inherit from both of us, and some people would start making plans before the child was even born.
They would call it preparation, duty, or protection. They would say a child with unusual abilities needed special guidance, then use that excuse to control every part of their life.
I had seen how quickly a wolf’s strength became a matter of status. I had also watched people with less power get pushed aside because they did not fit what their pack wanted them to be.
“I won’t raise our child to believe they owe the world something because of who their parents are,” I told her. “They would have responsibilities, of course, but they should get to decide what kind of life they want.”
Flourish reached for my hand. “Then that’s what we’ll give them.”
I looked at her, making sure I had heard her correctly.
“If we have a child, we’ll protect their right to choose their own life,” she continued. “We won’t decide their future because of their bloodline, and we won’t let the council or other packs make

those decisions for us. If they want to become a warrior, we’ll support them. If they want to study healing, run a business, or do something neither of us understands, we’ll let them explore it.”
“And if they don’t want to lead a pack?”
“Then they won’t lead one just because people expect it.”
Her answer came without hesitation. I had expected agreement, but hearing her say it so plainly eased a concern I had struggled to put into words.
Flourish had spent much of her life trying to understand what her family had kept from her.
I did not want our child to inherit a list of duties before they had the chance to discover who they were.
“My father made decisions about my life because he believed he knew what was best,” she said. “Some of those decisions protected me, but others left me with questions I still can’t answer. I won’t do that to our child.”
I tightened my fingers around hers. “We may have to fight people over it.”
“We already fight people over everything.”
“That’s true.”
She laughed, and I joined her. The sound eased the tension between us, though the questions Merek had raised remained unanswered.
After a moment, I asked, “Would you be afraid if our child developed unusual traits?”
“Of course I would.” She did not pretend otherwise. “I’d be afraid of what it might mean for them, especially if we couldn’t find anyone who understood what was happening. But fear wouldn’t give us the right to control them.”
I nodded. That was the answer I needed, even if it did not make the future any easier to face.
My wolf pressed close through our bond, responding to the thought of a family with her. I rested my forehead against hers for a moment.
“We don’t have to decide anything now,” I said.
“No, we don’t.”
“We can keep working with Merek and Darego. We can learn what we can about the bloodline before we even consider trying.”

“And we can keep being married without turning every conversation into a meeting about our future children.”
I smiled. “I can agree to that.”
She kissed me, then leaned against my shoulder while I put the healer’s notes back into their folder. We still had work waiting for us, and neither of us knew when we would be ready to take the next step.
For now, I was content to sit beside my wife and imagine a future where our child would be free to choose who they wanted to become.
