Chapter 367 When Work Stops Feeling Safe
Lady Flourish POV
I was reviewing F-Tech’s security report when someone knocked on my office door.
“Come in.”
A young employee stepped inside, holding a tablet against her chest.

I recognized her as one of the technicians assigned to our communications department, though we had never spoken privately.
“Lady Flourish, do you have a moment?”
I put the report aside. “Of course. What’s wrong?”
She glanced at the open door before closing it behind her.
“I wanted to ask something about the Eastern Army.”
My attention sharpened, “Go ahead.”
“If they attack F-Tech, can we actually protect the people working here?”
She asked quietly, but I heard the fear behind the question. Her wolf’s scent had grown stronger, a sign that she was struggling to keep her instincts under control.

I could have reassured her immediately. I could have told her our security was strong, our wards were reinforced, and our warriors would defend the building.
All of that was true, but none of it meant I could guarantee everyone would be safe if the Eastern Army came for us.
“I can’t promise that nobody will get hurt,” I said. “I won’t lie to you about that.”
Her fingers tightened around the tablet.
“Then what are we supposed to do? We’re technicians, not warriors. Most of us wouldn’t stand a chance against trained fighters.”
“You shouldn’t be expected to fight them. Your job is to do your work, and our responsibility is to prepare for threats that could put you in danger.”
“But are we prepared?”

“We have security systems, trained personnel, emergency procedures, and protected communication channels. I’m going to review all of them again. If I find a weakness, we’ll address it.”
She studied my face, perhaps hoping I would offer something more certain.
“Would you tell us if you thought the building wasn’t safe?”
“Yes.”
“And you wouldn’t ask us to stay just because the company needs us?”
“No. If an evacuation becomes necessary, you’ll be given clear instructions. Nobody here is expected to risk their life to protect company property.”
She nodded, though she still looked worried.
“I like working here,” she said. “I don’t want to leave. But I don’t want to find out we’re in danger only after someone starts attacking us.”
“You shouldn’t have to.”
After she left, I remained at my desk for a few seconds before calling Rhys.
“I want a complete security review. Every entrance, every ward, every communications system, and every evacuation route. Include the estate and the facilities where we store sensitive records.”
“Did something happen?”
“An employee asked whether we could protect them if the Eastern Army attacked. I couldn’t give her a guarantee, and I don’t intend to make one. I need to know exactly where we’re vulnerable.”
Rhys agreed to assemble the relevant teams. I ended the call, collected my tablet, and headed for the security control room.
The staff there looked surprised when I walked in without an appointment.
“I need access to the current system reports,” I told the lead technician. “Start with the perimeter wards.”
He pulled up the display and explained the latest readings. The main building’s wards were active, the outer sensors were functioning, and the emergency alarms had passed their most
recent tests.

However, two secondary access points relied on the same backup power supply.
“What happens if that supply fails during an attack?” I asked.

“The manual alarms would still work, but we’d lose automatic monitoring at both points until the backup was restored.”
“Why are two separate access points dependent on one supply?”
“The system was installed before the eastern perimeter was expanded. We haven’t completed the planned upgrade.”
I looked at the report. The expansion had been approved weeks earlier, but the work had been delayed while the team handled other projects.
“Move that upgrade to the top of the list. I want an independent backup for each access point, and I want the team to test the change before signing it off.”
He entered the instruction.
I then asked to see the emergency communication procedures. The system could send alerts to employees throughout the building, but the current evacuation plan depended on several people receiving the initial notification and relaying it to their departments.
“What if those people are unavailable?” I asked.
The technician admitted that the procedure had not been tested under those conditions.
“Create a system that doesn’t depend on one person passing a message along. Every department needs to receive the alert directly, with a backup method if the main network goes
down.”
I made a note to review the proposed changes myself.
By midday, I had visited three departments and found smaller problems in each one.
None meant F-Tech was completely exposed, but several could cause delays during an emergency.
A door sensor needed replacing, one evacuation route was partly blocked by stored equipment, and the security team had not updated its contact list since two employees changed roles.
I ordered the blocked route cleared immediately and asked Rhys to make sure the remaining issues were assigned to specific people with deadlines.
My wolf had been restless throughout the inspections.

“Check the boundaries,” she urged.
I understood the instinct. Our company had become more visible, and the Eastern Army was connected to the same network of threats we were investigating.
I couldn’t dismiss the possibility that our growing influence would make us a target.
When Damian arrived that afternoon, he found me studying the perimeter map in the security office.
“You’ve been here all day,” he said.
“And I’m not finished.”
He looked at the reports scattered across the desk. “Rhys told me you’re reviewing every system personally.”
“An employee asked whether we could protect our people during an attack. I realized I couldn’t answer that question without checking our preparations.”
“You have a team for this.”
“I know. I’m not replacing them. I want to understand what we’ve overlooked.”
Damian pulled up a chair and examined the map. “Then let me have Dartwood review the defensive arrangements with your security team. A second assessment could help.”
I considered it before agreeing. “They can review the external defenses, but F-Tech retains control of its systems and records. I don’t want sensitive information shared without proper authorization.”
“Agreed.”
I sent Rhys the instructions, then returned to the report.
There were still questions about how quickly we could evacuate the building and whether every employee knew where to go if the main exits became unsafe.
I added both to the review.
By the end of the day, I had a list of weaknesses, assigned teams to address them, and arranged a follow-up inspection.
It wasn’t the same as knowing we could withstand an attack, but at least I understood what needed to be done.

Before leaving the security office, I checked the employee alert system one more time.
The screen showed every department connected and ready to receive an emergency notification.

I hoped we would never need it. But if the Eastern Army came for F-Tech, I refused to let our people discover our weaknesses the hard way.
