Chapter 5 

The second I hit send, they started calling my boarding group. 

I stared out the window one last time. 

The city looked insane at night-all lit up like that. 

Reminded me of being eighteen. Brendan holding my hand under a streetlamp, looking at me like I was his whole 

world: 

“Lily, I promise-you’re never gonna be alone. Not on my watch.” 

I’d eaten that up back then. 

Took me way too long to learn that broken promises aren’t even the worst part. 

The worst part? When someone genuinely forgets they promised you anything at all. 

I shut my phone off and walked to the gate. 

When the plane took off, I didn’t cry. 

Just dug my notebook out of my bag and opened it to the last page. 

Three months of keeping score stared back at me.

Every single one had a date. What he forgot. How it felt. 

Used to think this made me crazy. 

Like, who does this? Who keeps a running tab of every time they get hurt? 

But I get it now.

Thought I was being dramatic. Dragging up old shit to make him feel bad. 

Now though? 

Now he remembered the hospital. 

Three days hooked up to an IV because of him. 

Me barely able to sit up, still trying to make him feel better. 

“Don’t beat yourself up. Accidents happen.” 

He’d sobbed like a kid that night. Squeezed my hand till it hurt. 

“I swear to god, Lily. I’m gonna remember every little thing about you.” 

So what’d he actually remember? 

Jack shit, apparently. 

Tina grabbed his wrist. 

“Babe the candles are literally melting on the cake!” 

He blinked. Opened his mouth. 

Phone lit up. 

Looked down. 

Don’t bother. I’m already at the airport. 

Good luck with everything, Brendan. 

Sarah told me later his face went ghost-white in like half a second. 

Tina didn’t notice yet. Touched his shoulder. 

“What’s wrong?” 

He shoved past her so hard she stumbled. 

Cake tipped sideways. Frosting went everywhere-all over her dress, the table, the floor. 

She literally shrieked.

“Brendan what the hell!” 

He was already halfway to the door. 

Keys in his fist. Moving fast. 

She chased after him, voice cracking. 

“You said you’d stay! You promised me!” 

Didn’t even slow down. 

“Move.” 

“It’s my birthday!” 

“Yeah? Yesterday was Lily’s.” 

Came out before he could stop it. 

He froze. 

He’d known the whole time. 

Just way too fucking late.
