Two hundred heads turned at once.
Near the door, two of Kane’s warriors froze with their drinks halfway to their mouths.
“Holy…” one of them breathed. “Who is that?”
“Visiting Alpha’s daughter? Has to be.” The other stood so fast his chair screeched across the floor. He flashed me a grin full of teeth. “Hey, beautiful! Sit with us! Best table in the house!”
Every male in the room was staring. Not one of them recognized me.
At the head table, Bianca’s smile curdled.
She had dressed to be the most beautiful woman in the room tonight. She’d planned to stand in the
spotlight while I was dragged through the mud. Instead, no one was looking at her at all.
She rose and strutted toward me on her stilettos, her sweetest fake smile in place.
“Hi, honey. I’m sorry, this is a private pack event. We don’t do plus-ones looking for a free meal. Whoever snuck you in-”
“Relax, Bianca!” a warrior shouted from the back, his eyes all over my legs. “If she’d been in this pack, you’d never have gotten that ‘prettiest she-wolf’ title!”
The room exploded with laughter.
Bianca’s face went bright red. She stared at me like she wanted to claw my eyes out.
Then Kane stood up.
He straightened his tie and pushed right past Bianca, his eyes running over me with naked hunger. A year apart, and he didn’t recognize the girl he’d spent three years with. To him, I was just new prey.
“Hey there.” He gave me his most charming smile, the same one he used to give me on that porch at three in the morning. “I’d remember a face like yours. What’s your name?”
Behind me, the Lycan King walked in.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. But a few of Kane’s warriors were already too
drunk to notice.
“Your Majesty!” one yelled. “It’s seven! Looks like the Runt chickened out!”
“Yeah, she’s probably hiding in a buffet somewhere!” another howled. “Hey, Alpha, let this new girl do the

bridal carry instead!”

Kane smirked and glanced at the door with pure disgust. “Don’t even mention that pig. She ruins my appetite. Thirty grand. Easiest money I ever made.”
I smiled.

I walked past every outstretched hand, every whistle, every man trying to catch my eye. My heels clicked across the marble until I stopped at the center table.
There sat the pig-head cake. And beside it, the steel chair built for me.
I ran one long red nail along the cold metal back.
The room slowly went quiet. Something in the air had changed.
Kane followed me, his voice dropping into a purr. “Sweetheart, that chair’s reserved for a fat, worthless nobody. Don’t sit there. I’m Alpha here tonight. Why don’t you sit on my lap instead?”
I picked up the glass of champagne poured for “the guest of honor.”
And threw it in his face.
“You little-” Kane lunged for my wrist.
I stepped back, easy as breathing, and pushed my hair off my left shoulder. The silver crescent on my collarbone caught the light.
I looked at Kane. At Bianca. At every face in that ballroom.
“Three years, Kane,” I said softly. “You held me every night. And you don’t recognize your own mate?”
