After hanging up, Ethan couldn’t understand why our father would do such a thing.
So he immediately called our father again.
To his surprise, our father harshly reprimanded him:
“You dare call to question your own father over such a trivial matter? Have you forgotten your place as my son?”
So
was all true.
No wonder I always wore ugly, cheap clothes and used bargain-bin items. Even the birthday gifts I gave my mother were things that would embarrass most people.
Back then, Ethan had mockingly called me a miser, saying I was too cheap to spend money even on my own mother’s birthday.
Now he realized I truly hadn’t had a single cent to my name.
So how had I survived all these years?
Our father had always been strict. Ethan had received his fair share of scolding growing up, but this time, he just couldn’t understand:
“But twelve years ago, Violet was only eight. You abandoned her in Vermont AND closed her bank, accounts. Didn’t you think she might not survive?”
Our father’s anger intensified over the phone:
“Violet made a mistake. Even if she died, it would have been her own fault!”
Ethan was completely shocked.
No matter what mistake I might have made, I was still his daughter. How could our father say something so cold-blooded?
If our father had always been this strict with everyone, that would be one thing. But Amber had made countless mistakes growing up, including pushing Olivia Blackwood down a staircase, yet our father had never punished her even slightly.
Ethan felt something deeply wrong about the whole situation. He couldn’t help asking:
“Did you discuss closing Violet’s accounts with Mom?”
The entire Parker family fortune came from my mother’s side. Everyone took her last name, not my father’s. Even the company had been run by my mother until she lost her second daughter and, emotionally exhausted, gradually handed business operations over to my father.
Even so, my mother would never have agreed to cutting off all my living expenses!
As expected, my father slammed his desk:
“I make the decisions in this family now! If you keep asking questions, I’ll close your accounts too. Let’s see if you can survive without a penny, just like Violet!”
The phone went dead, leaving only a heartless dial tone.
Ethan’s head was buzzing, but he still couldn’t make sense of any of it.
That entire day, my mother’s health deteriorated.
First, she fell in the morning, cutting her leg.
Then, after her afternoon nap, her migraine returned.
This attack seemed worse than previous ones.
As the pain continued, she started calling out Amber’s name.
The family doctor was summoned but could offer little help:
“Mrs. Parker’s condition stems from complications during childbirth. Regular painkillers aren’t effective anymore.”
“I heard that Miss Parker had been giving Mrs. Parker daily massages recently, which significantly relieved her headaches. Perhaps we should ask Miss Parker to come massage her-it might provide some comfort.”
Ethan knew exactly which “Miss Parker” the doctor meant.
But now I was at the Blackwood estate and wouldn’t be back anytime soon.
He suddenly remembered that when I had been giving our mother massages, Amber had learned a bit of the technique. Since my mother kept calling “Amber,” he hurriedly left the room to call her. But Amber immediately hung up.
Ethan kept calling back.
It wasn’t until the twenty-seventh call that Amber finally answered, her tone immediately irritated: “What do you want, Ethan? Can’t you see I’m busy?”
The background noise was chaotic, sounding like a party.
With Amber, Ethan was always patient. Despite having called over twenty times, his voice remained gentle:
“Mom fell this morning, and her migraine returned this afternoon. She keeps calling your name. Could you-”
Amber cut him off angrily:
“Mom’s had migraines for years. Doctors say it’s incurable. What am I supposed to do?”
“Besides, I’m in the middle of something important! Ethan, can you stop bothering me with these trivial matters?”
Ethan finally lost his patience:
“Amber! Do you hear yourself? Mom is sick, and you’re calling it trivial? Don’t you remember when you accidentally cut your finger, she skipped a board meeting specifically to come home and take care of you?”
Amber paused for a second, then immediately started crying:
“Egan, why are you being so mean to me? You’ve never talked to me like this before! I’m never speaking to you again!”
Hearing her cry, Ethan’s heart immediately softened.
But before he could say anything, Amber had already hung up.
Listening to the same dial tone he’d heard that morning, Ethan felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness wash over him.
As he turned around, he discovered my mother had been standing in the doorway the whole time. Ethan’s first instinct was to hide his phone.
But when he saw the flash of pain and resignation on my mother’s face, he realized how foolish his
action was.
Not knowing how to comfort her, Ethan remained silent until my mother spoke first
“Amber is still young, and she’s been raised with special treatment her whole life. Be more patient with her. Don’t take what she says too seriously.”
With that, she returned to her room alone.
To say my mother wasn’t hurt by Amber’s words would be a lie.
Whether from her migraine or something else, she tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep, thoughts of Amber consuming her mind.
She thought about how she’d raised Amber step by step, how Amber would sweetly call her “Mommy.” As she continued thinking, Amber’s face suddenly transformed into mine in her mind. She remembered that before I was eight, she had loved me dearly too.
But those memories were so distant now, she could barely recall them.
When she’d impulsively sent me to Vermont, she had regretted it. But Amber had filled the emptiness in her heart from losing her daughter, so she gradually forgot about me.
By the time I returned to the Parker house, I had become a stranger to her.
I didn’t act cute around her or share my thoughts. My behavior was always cautious, my head
