I couldn’t dodge in time and instinctively closed my eyes.
One second, two seconds, three seconds…
The expected pain never came.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Alexander standing in front of me, his hand firmly gripping my father’s wrist. His voice carried a cold edge I’d never heard before:
“Violet is part of the Blackwood family now. You dare to touch her? You’d better consider the consequences first!”
My father, who had always played the role of the stern, unquestionable patriarch in my life, suddenly lost all his authoritative demeanor when facing Alexander. He switched to a placating tone:
“Mr. Blackwood, this is just a misunderstanding. Let’s talk this through civilly.”
Alexander ignored him completely, taking my hand and leading me away from the chaotic scene. Just as we stepped through the exit, someone blocked our path.
I hadn’t expected to see Drake here.
His head was wrapped in gauze, apparently injured, but his eyes were fixed on our clasped hands- with a mixture of pain and rage. He looked ready to physically separate us.
Alexander naturally positioned himself in front of me:
Can I help you, Mr. Sullivan?”
“There for Violet. What business is it of yours?”
Though Olivia and Alexander hadn’t told me, I knew that Drake had been coming to the Blackwood estate almost daily, only to be turned away by security each time.
Drake usually cared deeply about his image, but now he seemed beyond caring. Despite being chased away once, twice, three times, he kept coming back.
I sighed and tugged gently at Alexander’s sleeve:
“Let me talk to him.”
Alexander nodded:
“Call me if you need anything.”
The casual intimacy between us seemed to drive Drake crazy, but he didn’t dare show it. Instead he looked at me almost pleadingly:
“Violet, I’ve finally found you. Won’t you come with me?”
He held out the necklace in his palm. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Gone was his commanding tone and superior attitude. His former arrogance had completely / transformed into humble begging.
But my gaze toward him was cold as ice:
“Since you’ve already received the necklace, I assume you’ve seen the letter breaking our engagement?”
Drake had never seen such a ruthless expression on my face before, as if I were looking at a complete stranger.
He suddenly started to panic.
After that night at the bar, he had gone with Ethan to the Blackwood estate.
But no matter how many times they went, the security guards wouldn’t even open the gate. For the
first time in his life, Drake had his head cracked open by someone’s baton.
Lying in the hospital, he’d desperately tried calling me, but could never get through.
He’d exhausted every connection he had, yet still couldn’t learn how I was doing at the Blackwood
estate.
In that moment, he deeply regretted his foolish behavior.
He had witnessed my genuine love for him firsthand.
