Just thinking about Amber being our father’s illegitimate daughter made Ethan unable to look up. He was about to make up some excuse when the hospital room door opened, and Amber walked in carrying medicine. 

“Mom, you’re finally awake! Amber missed you so much.” 

She threw herself into our mother’s arms with childlike affection. 

A rare smile appeared on our mother’s pale face:

Ethan couldn’t tell whether our mother was referring to the stillborn baby or to me.

She cried dramatically for a while, but for once, she didn’t hear our mother’s comforting response. Confused, she looked up to meet our mother’s eyes, filled with both anger and bewilderment: “You’re Robert’s illegitimate daughter?” 

Amber completely lost her composure, though she was still clever enough to respond quickly: “Mom, what are you saying? I’m your Amber, the daughter you’ve raised all these years!”
