Seeing me curled up on the floor, nearly lifeless, my mother felt truly frightened for the first time, She immediately had me rushed to the hospital.
Thankfully, the emergency treatment worked, and my fever finally broke.
When Ethan was called to the hospital, he was shocked too.
He never imagined things would turn out this way.
Even now, he couldn’t understand why he’d gotten so angry.
But when he’d seen my face full of resentment, it had disturbed him deeply.
I was his sister-how dare I look at him like he was my worst enemy?
I was supposed to be humble and eager to please, always following him around like a loyal dog. How
could I say something like “I will never waste another ounce of feeling or effort on someone as rotten as you”?
What right did I have to talk to him that way?
My mother scolded Ethan harshly.
Amber rushed to his defense:
“Ethan didn’t mean it. Besides, Violet made him angry first.”
“She’s just mad about going to the Blackwoods, so she took it out on him. Poor Ethan’s been so upset he’s barely eaten for two days.”
“Mom, please stop scolding him. If Violet won’t forgive him, let her be mad at me instead. She can hit me or yell at me-I’ll take it all.”
As she spoke, Amber burst into theatrical tears.
My mother quickly pulled her favorite daughter into her arms:
/
“It’s okay, it’s okay. Violet isn’t the type to hold grudges. She’ll get over it in a couple of days.” No one noticed that I had already opened my eyes in the hospital bed, coldly watching this entire
scene.
One day later, I was discharged from the hospital.
།
The doctor’s orders were that I should stay for two more days, but tomorrow was the Blackwoods’ deadline.
My mother handled my discharge paperwork and had originally planned to pick me up herself. But as she was leaving the house, Amber grabbed her arm:
“Mom, you promised to come with me to get my custom dress today. You haven’t forgotten, have you?”
“But I also promised Violet I’d pick her up today.”
Thinking about how tomorrow I would be taking Amber’s place at the Blackwood estate, my mother couldn’t help feeling a twinge of guilt.
“But this dress is being made by that famous designer I worked so hard to book…”
Amber’s eyes welled up with tears. “You used to always keep your promises to me. Is it because Violet’s back that I’m not important to you anymore?”
“If that’s the case, maybe I should just leave.”
“After all, Violet tried to abandon me in the woods back then.”
At the mention of that incident, my mother’s expression immediately changed. She carelessly instructed the driver to pick me up whenever convenient.
The Parker family driver was no fool. He’d long noticed I was the least favored person in the
household, and with Amber’s subtle hint, he simply didn’t show up at the hospital that afternoon.
I stood at the hospital entrance waiting for three hours before letting out a bitter, self-mocking smile. I’d known this would happen.
Anyway, tomorrow I’d be sent to the Blackwoods, never to return.
Just as I was about to call an Uber, another car pulled up in front of me.
Drake got out of the driver’s seat, almost not recognizing me when he saw me.
In just three days, how had I become so weak?
“Violet, what happened? Why are you leaving the hospital? No wonder I couldn’t find you at the Parker house.”
“Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been? I was about to call the police.”
Through the car window, I spotted a bakery box on the passenger seat.
It was vanilla-Amber’s favorite flavor.
I’d heard that particular bakery required reservations at least a week in advance.
Once, when I’d walked past that place, I’d stopped to look longingly at the cakes in the window. But Drake had said:
“That bakery isn’t anything special. They just use the reservation system as a marketing gimmick to attract customers. If you want cake, I can take you next door. They have plenty ready-made.”
In the end, I didn’t buy any cake.
Now I understood-maybe the bakery wasn’t special, but people definitely had categories of “special” and “not special” in Drake’s mind.
I wasn’t special enough to even deserve a cake.
“Violet? Violet?”

Seeing that I remained silent, Drake frowned, “The fact that I came looking for you means I’ve
forgiven you for last time. You’d better appreciate it!”
