Chapter 10
Jensen’s eyes lit up instantly.
He seemed to see a glimmer of hope and came stumbling toward me.
“Everlee. Everlee, please forgive me, okay?”
He dropped to his knees in front of me with a heavy thud.
His sudden action caused the surrounding crowd to look over.
“I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have hurt you for a liar like Mina.”
“I shouldn’t have taken your sacrifices for granted.”
With trembling hands, he pulled a jewelry box from his pocket.
Inside was the wedding ring that used to be ours.
“Everlee, can we start over?”
“I don’t care about anything else anymore.”
“I’ll stay by your side and just help you out.”
“Please, just give me one more chance.”
He wept uncontrollably, his face covered in tears, completely stripped of dignity.
The once-arrogant Jensen, who used to think I would come running back with a simple wave of his hand, had been entirely broken by six months of destitution.
I looked down at him.
I looked at the white hairs on his head and his rough hands.
Yet my heart didn’t feel a single shred of vengeful satisfaction. There was only absolute indifference.
“Jensen, you don’t love me,” I said calmly.
“You just miss the version of me that loved you wholeheartedly.”
“You miss the warm meals I made for you.”
“You miss how I tolerated your selfishness.”

“You miss the sense of superiority you got from being with me.”
Jensen shook his head frantically. “No. I love you. I really love you!”
I took a step back, avoiding his hand as he tried to reach out and grab me.
“It’s too late. The moment you made me take off my wedding dress, my love for you died completely.”
The people around us began to whisper, and some pulled out their phones to take photos.
I ignored him, turned on my heel, and walked toward the gallery exit.
Outside, the sunlight was perfect.
The bougainvillea in the garden bloomed brilliantly.
Mrs. Lovelace was sitting by the door enjoying the sun, and she waved when she saw me come out.
“Everlee, I made coconut fish stew with yuca for dinner. Come over and eat.”
“Okay,” I replied with a smile.
I made my way toward her house.
After a few steps, a familiar voice drifted from behind me. “Everlee!”
My footsteps paused.
Mina stood behind a tree.
She had lost a lot of weight, her hair was dry and brittle, and her face was completely bare of makeup.
Wearing a pilled sweatshirt, she looked incredibly pathetic.
She stared straight at me. “Everlee, I came to return your thing.”
She brought out a bag from behind her back and opened it.
Inside was the hand-embroidered wedding dress, folded neatly.
“I washed it. It’s not ruined.”
I looked at the dress.
The feather patterns shimmered slightly under the sunlight.
Every stitch and every thread had been embroidered during the countless late nights I had stayed up.

I didn’t take it.
“Keep it, or throw it away. Either is fine.”
Mina’s lips trembled. “Everlee, I know you hate me…”
“I don’t,” I cut her off. “Hating someone is too exhausting.”
I meant it.
During these past six months in El Salvador, I had learned one thing.
Some people are worth your hate, while others don’t even deserve that much.
Holding the dress, Mina stood rooted to the spot as tears slid down her cheeks.
I turned around and kept walking.
The savory aroma of coconut fish stew drifted from Mrs. Lovelace’s house.
A few children learning resist-dyeing were chasing each other around the garden.
One little boy ran over and grabbed my hand. “Everlee, look at the fabric I dyed today.”
He held up a piece of blue-and-white cloth, grinning to reveal two missing front teeth.
I crouched down and looked at it carefully. “This pattern is beautiful. It looks like clouds.”
The little boy jumped up in excitement.
That night, I ate a large bowl of fish stew.
Mrs. Lovelace poured me a small glass of her homemade wine.
The moon was perfectly round, and the breeze was light.
Sitting in the garden, I began to conceptualize my next artwork.
It was going to be a phoenix.
Not a tapestry of birds paying homage to a master, but a phoenix rising from the ashes.
Purged by the flames, rising anew, taking flight and living for no one but itself.
