Chapter 9
Jensen stared fixatedly at my phone as if it were a lethal poison.
“This… this is fabricated,” he stammered, frantically trying to deny it. “It’s completely fabricated.”
But his trembling hands betrayed his true thoughts.
I tucked the phone back into my bag without wasting another breath on pointless explanations.
“Go find out the truth yourself. Now take your people and get lost.”
Suddenly, my mother dropped to her knees in front of me with a heavy thud.
She finally realized that I was truly done with them.
“Everlee, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have favored Mina. I was fooled by her, too!”
“Please save us. It’s thirty million dollars. If we pay that penalty, even our house will be seized by the court.”
She clung to my legs, sobbing and wailing hysterically.
I looked down at the woman who had given birth to me and raised me.
I felt no sense of triumph, only a deep, bone-weary exhaustion.
“Mom, this is the last time I will ever call you that.”
“I taught you all the embroidery techniques long ago.”
“You were the ones who got greedy for quick money, trying to cash in on Mina’s fake internet persona.”
“You reap what you sow. Deal with it yourselves.”
One by one, I pried her fingers off me.
I turned around, walked into the house, and shut the door behind me.
Outside, my mother’s shrill cries and Jensen’s stunned silence blurred together.
They left the next day because the investors had already arrived with lawyers to seal the Crowe family
property.
I only learned about the aftermath through online news updates.
Because they couldn’t deliver the tapestry, they were sued for breach of contract and faced massive
damages.

Unable to handle the shock, my mother suffered a stroke on the spot and ended up bedridden with partial paralysis.
Seeing the ship sinking. Mina cleaned out the family’s remaining cash and tried to flee.
Jensen intercepted her at the airport.
He called the police and reported her for grand larceny and fraud.
At the police station, Mina lost her mind and screamed curses at Jensen.
“You think you’re some kind of saint? You’re just a hypocritical piece of trash!”
“You couldn’t let go of how well Everlee treated you, but you also loved how much I worshipped you.”
“You deserve to lose absolutely everything!”
Jensen stood outside the station precinct, frozen like a statue.
His company fired him shortly after due to his frequent absences and unstable mental state.
The house meant for our marriage was auctioned off at a low price to settle a fraction of the Crowe family
debt.
He had lost everything.
Six months later, the rainy season in El Salvador drew to a close.
My indigo resist-dyeing artwork won the gold prize at a local exhibition.
The gallery was packed on opening day.
Weaving through the crowd, I caught sight of a familiar figure.
Jensen stood there wearing a faded, washed-out shirt.
His hair was unkempt, and his shoulders were heavily slouched.
He stood directly in front of my display, staring blankly at the signature line.
The name “Everlee Crowe” seemed to burn his eyes.
Slowly, he turned his head.
