Chapter 4 

They all thought I was the sensible one who couldn’t live without Jensen 

So everything of mine had to make way for Mina 

Early the next morning, texts from Jensen popped up on my screen 

[Everlee, Reid mentioned you were angry yesterday?] 

[That place is just a temporary stay for Mina. Don’t be so petty, okay?] 

[I’m free this morning. Didn’t we agree to visit our old teacher at school today?] 

Right. We had agreed to visit our teacher right after the wedding. 

I stared at the words on the screen. 

I didn’t reply. 

But I still washed my face, changed my clothes, and caught a cab to school. 

I wasn’t doing it to give him a chance. 

I was doing it to put a final period on these past seven years. 

At nine o’clock, I sat across from our high school teacher Mrs. Winthrop. 

She looked at me affectionately. “Why hasn’t Jensen arrived yet? You two have been together for so long, and you’ve finally made it official.” 

She began to reminisce. “Back then, that boy worked incredibly hard just for you, jumping straight from the 

bottom of the class.” 

“Otherwise, I definitely would have stepped in to break you up You two must be happy 

I offered a bitter smile. 

By nine thirty, Jensen still hadn’t shown up 

At ten o’clock, Jensen’s call finally came through 

The faint sound of rumbling thunder echoed in the background 

“Everlee, are you there yet?” His tone carried a hint of anxiety 

“Yeah.”

“I’m so sorry. Mina is terrified of thunder.” 

“There was a loud clap just now, and she got so scared she hid in the closet and refuses to come out.” 

“I really can’t leave her right now. Apologize to Mrs. Winthrop for me. Next time, we’ll go visit her together.” 

Before I could speak, Mina’s tearful voice drifted through the line. “Jensen, I’m scared…” 

“It’s okay, I’m right here,” Jensen cooed tenderly. 

Then he spoke back into the phone. “Don’t be so dramatic. Be reasonable for once. Mina is very unstable 

right now. I don’t have the energy for anything else.” 

The line went dead. 

Mrs. Winthrop looked at me. “Everlee, what’s wrong?” 

My tears finally fell. “Mrs. Winthrop, I don’t want Jensen anymore.” 

Instead of returning to my studio, I went straight to the airport. 

I bought a one-way ticket to El Salvador. 

While I was waiting at the boarding gate, I opened up the family group chat. 

Jensen had posted a short video. 

In it, Mina was curled up on the sofa, holding a mug of milk. 

Jensen was gently blow-drying her hair with complete tenderness. 

His caption read: [Taking care of this poor little thing. Hopefully the storm passes soon.] 

A long string of thumbs-up emojis from our relatives followed below. 

My mother replied: [Jensen, you’re such a good man. I can rest easy leaving Mina in your hands.] 

Aunt Patricia: [Now this is what a real couple looks like.] 

Staring at those words, my heart felt completely numb. 

I tapped on Jensen’s profile picture and hit delete. 

Then I left the family group chat. 

One by one, I blocked every single relative’s contact number.

The boarding announcement crackled over the airport speakers. 

I picked up my single suitcase and walked toward the gate without looking back. 

At eight o’clock that evening, Jensen finally finished soothing Mina and headed to my studio. 

He brought along a strawberry cake, my absolute favorite. 

“Everlee, I came to make it up to you.” 

He pushed the door open. 

But the inside was empty. 

There was only a discarded blueprint left on the desk. 

The smile on his face slowly froze.
