The breeze in El Salvador was very light.
I rented a small, one-story house with a garden.
I spent my days learning indigo resist-dyeing from Mrs. Lovelace, a local elderly woman.
I worked at sunrise and rested at sunset.
Life was simple.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in London, Jensen was staring blankly at the discarded blueprint.
He assumed I was just throwing another tantrum.
“She’s definitely hiding out at one of her friends’ places again,” Jensen muttered to himself, setting the
strawberry cake on the desk.
He dialed my number.
“We’re sorry, the number you have dialed is no longer in service.”
Jensen froze.
Out of service?
He frowned and tried dialing again.
The same recorded female voice played back.
He opened WhatsApp, intending to send me a message.
But it wouldn’t go through.

The color finally drained from Jensen’s face.
He immediately called my best friend.
“Where is Everlee? Put her on the phone. Tell her to stop playing these childish blocking games.”
My friend let out a cold laugh on the other end.

“Just tell her to stop messing around. Mina’s condition just stabilized a bit.”
“With her running off like this, everyone was worried.”
“Worried?” my friend mocked. “Those toxic relatives of yours probably wish Everlee would never come back.”
She hung up on him immediately.
Jensen stared at his screen, a wave of irritation washing over him.
Right then, my mother’s call came through.
“Jensen, where did that brat run off to?”
“The submission deadline for the cultural heritage embroidery showcase is next month.”
“Mina’s wrist hasn’t fully healed yet, so there’s no way she can handle those complex stitches.”
“Tell Everlee to get her ass back here right now and finish the final details on Mina’s ‘Flight of the Aves’
tapestry.”
Jensen pinched the bridge of his nose. “Mrs. Crowe, Everlee blocked me.”
“What?” my mother screamed into the phone. “She’s gone too far!”
“Abandoning the family business over a man-does she even respect me as her mother?”
“I’m going to her studio right now to ask her.”
Jensen didn’t stop her.
He actually believed that with my mother stepping in, I would obediently back down.
After all, over the years, whenever my mother used guilt and family obligation to pressure me, I always gave
in eventually.
Half an hour later, my mother called Jensen back, furious.

Jensen bolted upright.
He accidentally knocked over the strawberry cake on the desk.
The frosting smeared all over the floor.
“Sublet?” His voice trembled slightly.
“Yes. Is she insane? Didn’t she treat that stupid studio like it was her life?”
Jensen didn’t stay to listen to my mother’s complaints and rushed straight out the door.
He drove to what was supposed to be our new home.
He pushed the door open.
Mina was wearing my slippers, sitting on the sofa watching TV.
Seeing Jensen, she immediately stood up to greet him. “Jensen, you’re back.”
Jensen bypassed her entirely and walked straight into the kitchen.
He ripped the trash can open.
Amidst the food scraps and leftovers lay a comb with a broken tooth.
It was the one he had made with his own hands as our seventh-anniversary gift.
