My mom froze “Hayden weren’t you reported missing in the wilderness ” 

“Mrs. Lane St, I got lucky.” Hayden’s voice was urgent and excited, as if he had been holdings in a year’s worth of words. “After I got separated on the Nierra High Route, I fell into a dark figure and broke my leg. I couldn’t climb out. It was a place even search and rescue couldn’t find yourvived by drinking water from cracks in the rock and eating moss. Later, when my leg slowly lealed, I followed an underground stream for months before I finally found a way out. There was no signal the mountains. I walked for an entire year before I made it back.” 

He told the story with dramatic emotion. 

My mom opened her mouth, and her gaze drifted toward the living room before she could stop 

herself. 

Carter happened to walk out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of soup. 

The moment Hayden saw him, his expression visibly stiffened. 

He looked Carter up and down for a long while. He clearly found him familiar, but no matter how hard he tried, he could not remember where he had seen him before, 

“Are you a relative of the Lanes? Have we met somewhere?” Hayden asked, confusion in his voice. 

Carter did not answer. He only shifted slightly to block Hayden’s view into the house, his tone calm “Who are you looking for?” 

“I’m here to pick up my fiancée, Nora Lane,” Hayden’s gaze moved past Carter’s shoulder as he tried to look into the living room. 

Carter lifted a hand and lightly held the door in place. 

“What are you doing?” Hayden asked again, a trace of wariness entering his voice. 

Carter replied mildly, “I should be asking you that.”
