#Chapter 11

“Nora!” Hayden’s voice suddenly rose. “Can you hear me? It’s me, Hayden Hawthorne! I came back

alive!”

“I only found out after I came back that you’d moved out. Did you leave because you didn’t want to live in a house filled with our memories? Were you afraid every corner would remind you of me?”

“You don’t have to be afraid anymore. I came back safe. I came to take you home.”

I paused.

Then I slowly stood from the couch, supported my lower back with one hand, and walked to the

entryway.

He had lost a lot of weight. It seemed taking care of that girl had drained the life out of him.

When I counted the days, it was not actually time for his planned “return” yet.

Why was he back early?

I glanced at the hiking jacket he was wearing. It was torn in several places.

He really did look as if he had crawled out of the mud.

“Nora!” The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened. “I finally found my way back! I made it through the Sierra High Route. I came back alive!”

He rushed forward a step.

Then he saw my rounded belly.

The expression on his face shifted from wild joy to confusion, then from confusion to disbelief.

“You…”

His voice trembled so badly he could barely speak.

His first reaction was that it was his child.

But that was impossible.

He knew very well that every time he had slept with me, he had been meticulous about birth control. There had never been an accident.

Slowly, he turned his head and looked at Carter.

As if deliberately confirming Hayden’s suspicion, Carter casually placed one hand at the small of my back.

Hayden’s gaze returned to Carter’s face, and he finally understood why Carter looked familiar.

Could it have been at the county clerk’s office?

Were they the man and woman he had seen that day, when Lila had coaxed him into getting married

at the courthouse?

And was that the wedding favor box she had given to the staff?

He remembered now. It had been the style I had once chosen after comparing countless options.

Back then, I had asked him excitedly, “Does this champagne-gold one look pretty?” He had not even looked up before saying, “Whatever you choose is fine.”

He had never cared about the wedding.

He had only thought I would mourn him like a widow and wait for him forever.

I was the woman who would fall right back in line once he came back and said a few sweet words.

But as it turned out, that day, I had taken another man’s hand, walked into the county clerk’s office, and decisively ended our nine-year relationship.

Hayden felt as if someone had carved a knife deep into his chest.

All his certainty, all his confidence, and all his belief that a little coaxing would fix everything shattered completely in that moment.

“You…” Hayden’s lips trembled. “Who are you?”

Carter said nothing. He only looked at me.

I touched my stomach, lifted my eyes to Hayden, and said softly and calmly, “Sorry, but after you ‘died,’ my husband wouldn’t let me mourn you like a widow.”

“Who is your husband?” Hayden whipped his head around and glared at Carter.

Carter gently wrapped an arm around my shoulders, lowered his head to my ear, and said, “Did a burglar get in? Should I grab a broom?”

i could not help laughing,

Hayden’s face drained, then went ashen, then livid.

“Do you have any idea what this past year was like for me? I almost really died in those mountains. I came back for you. And this is how you treat me?”

I looked at him and said calmly, “For me? Before you ‘disappeared,’ didn’t you tell your hiking buddies that since I was so blindly in love with you, I would mourn you like a widow even if you died? Since you were so sure I’d wait, why did you risk coming back at all? You might as well have slept in those mountains forever.”

He froze.

“How do you know that? Nora, let me explain.”

“Don’t bother.” I had no patience to listen. “You got another woman pregnant, got legally married for her, and faked your disappearance so you could take care of her. That’s your true love, so what is there to explain?”

His mouth opened. “No. She and L… we’re already divorced. And that baby… that baby wasn’t even mine. It was another management trainee’s. I was blind.”

I smiled.

So that was why he had come back early.

“Leave.” I turned around. “My husband has a bad temper. He really will beat you with a broom.”

Hayden stood in the doorway as if he had been struck by lightning.

Without looking back, I walked into the bedroom and gently closed the door.
