Chapter 8
I walked Mason out to his car, and when I looked back, I saw Caleb lurking in the shadows, his eyes
burning with resentment as he watched us leave.
He and my sister were cut from the same cloth, consumed by jealousy. The only difference was
Caleb was better at hiding it.
I raised my hand and called over a servant. “I’m heading to Whispering Ridge to gather some herbs for the Alpha-to-be’s tonic,” I announced loudly, making sure Caleb could hear. “I’ll go ahead. You bring the tools and meet me there.”
Then, I made my way to the ridge.
I’d gathered a sizable bundle of calming and restorative herbs when I saw him, Caleb, walking toward me step by deliberate step, a leather whip in his hand.
My body trembled uncontrollably. I had to steel myself.
“Caleb, what are you doing here?” I asked.
He let out a derisive snort. “Chole, why don’t you guess?”
His demeanor, the look in his eyes… it was a perfect echo of the man from my past life. Cold sweat broke out across my skin, but I forced myself to stay calm. “You touch me, and you’re betraying your own brother. Don’t you dare.”
“I hear Mason actually cares about you?” he sneered. “Well then, I’ll just have to ruin you.”
In a flash, he seized my wrists, pinning me down beneath him. Tears welled up and spilled over.
“Get off me! If Mason finds out, he’ll kill you!”
Crack!
The whip struck me hard.
“You bitch! I’m the heir of Greyfang,” he spat. “Everyone will just think you seduced me!”
The pain made me bite my lip until it bled. But it wasn’t enough. I had to provoke him further.
“You’re just a pathetic, sickly runt, Caleb! Nothing like Mason. Why would I ever look twice at you?”

His eyes flashed crimson with rage. The whip came down again and again. “Shut up! Say another, word and I’ll kill you!”
I screamed with each blow, the pain blinding.
Just as his hands tore at the fabric of my dress, he was violently kicked aside.
I clutched my torn clothes to my chest and looked up to see Mason standing there, his eyes blazing
with fury.
Inside, I smiled. Phase two of my plan was complete.
