Chapter 13 

The next day, a crucial clan meeting was called. Both Mason and Caleb, as direct descendants, had 

to attend. Ava and I waited outside. 

Ava was still dressed in long sleeves and pants. She’d grown much thinner. This was the first time we’d seen each other in two years. 

She stared at me, visibly shocked. “You… you haven’t been beaten? How…?” 

I casually adjusted the expensive ring on my finger, a sudden gift from Mason one day. He’d said it meant I was his wife for life and I should never take it off. I knew it was just the herbs talking. 

“As you can see, Ava, Mason loves me,” I said calmly. 

Her face darkened. 

I continued, “What’s wrong? Hasn’t Caleb been treating you well? You look awful.” 

“Of course he has!” she snapped, her voice tight with fury. “Caleb loves me!” 

Just then, Caleb stormed out of the meeting room, his face a thundercloud. Ava stumbled backward in fear, but he grabbed her arm and dragged her away. 

As she was pulled off, I heard her final, pathetic attempt at saving face, “Caleb, don’t be like that! I’ll make it right when we get home, I promise!” 

The sheer ridiculousness of it was almost pitiful.
