#Chapter 3

That night, after Hayden fell asleep, the phone beside him suddenly lit up.

I reached over to turn the screen off for him, only to see the message on it.

Bambi: [Hayden, I threw up again today. When are you coming to take care of me? The baby and miss you so much!]

The sender was saved as “Bambi.”

My hand hovered in midair for two seconds.

Then I picked up the phone and opened their chat history.

There was only that newest message from her in the chat.

It seemed he did his “cleanup” every day.

After a moment of hesitation, I opened the girl’s profile.

Her latest post showed two photos of pregnancy tests, with the caption, [Two lines. I’m stunned.]

It had been posted at three in the afternoon on the very day our wedding date was set.

So on the same day he set a wedding date with me, he was celebrating becoming a father with

another woman.

How perfect.

I put the phone down, went to the kitchen, poured myself a glass of water, and slowly drank it.

When I came back, he rolled over, one arm lazily draped over his eyes.

“Nora…” he mumbled.

I did not move.

As if he had dreamed about something, his brows furrowed slightly. Then he spoke in that soft, nasal voice that used to make me go soft. “I just dreamed that I disappeared, and you didn’t wait for me. You turned around and married someone else.”

When he said it, he sounded startled and instinctively shifted closer to me.

The old me would definitely have rushed over to hug him, saying dramatic but sincere things like

we would never be apart.

Now, I only let out a fake little laugh. “Go to sleep.”

He half-opened his eyes and looked at me in a daze.

He seemed dissatisfied with my response.

But I no longer had the energy to deal with his little moods, so I lay down and went to sleep.

Early the next morning, the doorbell rang.

Three backcountry hiking buddies squeezed inside with huge packs on their backs.

“Hayden, I printed the route map for the Sierra High Route. Look, we start from Pine Creek Trailhead, make it to the 9,500-foot camp on day one, then cross the high ridge near Puppet Pass on day two…”

They spread out the map and started talking over one another as they planned.

I leaned against the kitchen doorframe, sipping coffee without saying a word.

When Hayden saw that I had no reaction, he took the map and came over to me on his own. “Nora, look. We’ve calculated how many miles we’ll cover each day. We have a plan and experience. Nothing is going to happen.”

“Mm.”

I responded once and kept sipping my coffee.

He seemed a little uneasy and looked like he wanted to say more, but his phone rang. He went out to the balcony to answer it.

From that far away, I could not hear what the person on the other end was saying, but I could vaguely catch a few coy, drawn-out notes.

Her voice sounded soft, sweet, and laced with laughter.

The three hiking buddies exchanged glances and pretended to keep studying the map.

Hayden spoke for two minutes before hanging up. When he pushed the balcony door open and came back, he said as if nothing had happened, “A female employee at the company. She just started recently and had a small question about work.”

He glanced at me as if waiting for me to ask which female employee it was or what the question had

been.

But I said nothing.

I thought of that “Bambi.”

At the beginning of the year, his company had indeed hired a few recent college graduates as

management trainees.

One of them was a girl named Lila Hart. I had seen her downstairs on the day I went to Hayden’s

office during her interview.

She had her hair in a ponytail and two dimples when she smiled.

Whenever she saw Hayden, her eyes lit up, and every other sentence out of her mouth was

“Hayden.”

Back then, I had even said to Hayden, “That girl seems pretty sharp.”

Hayden had smiled and said, “She is. Her major is a good fit too.”

Now that I thought about it, it wasn’t just her major that was a fit.

“Nora?” Hayden suddenly called my name, a hint of testing in his voice. “You’re not going to ask

what it was about?”

“I don’t understand company matters anyway.” I wiped my hands, picked up my bag, and said, “I’m going to the grocery store. You guys keep going.”

When I reached the door, I glanced at my vibrating phone.

A message appeared on the screen.

[The appointment is booked for May 1.]

I had just replied with “Okay” when Hayden snatched the phone out of my hand.

“May 1? What are you doing that day?”
