#Chapter 4

He stared at the unfamiliar profile picture on my screen and the chat window with only two lines in

it, his brows knitting slightly.

“Who is this?”

I answered calmly, “Someone who helped me book an appointment. I have a major life event to take

care of on May 1.”

I reached out to take my phone back.

He did not give it to me. Instead, he grabbed my wrist, and his tone softened.

“What important thing could you possibly have to take care of? Nora, are you still mad that I can’t be with you on May 1?”

“When I come back, I’ll make it up to you. I’ll give you the wedding you want, and we can go anywhere you want for our honeymoon, okay?”

He said all the right things, his voice gentle.

The three hiking buddies stood off to the side, pretending to study the map, but they were obviously

all ears.

I was just about to speak when someone I recognized walked into the yard.

“Hayden, busy? I was in the area, so I stopped by to ask for some time off.”

Her tone was casual, as if she were walking into her own home.

I froze for a second.

When I opened the door for the hiking buddies earlier, the front gate had clearly been locked.

If she could walk in without any trouble, then this obviously was not her first time here.

I laughed bitterly to myself.

When had this home become a cage for three?

It had almost trapped the foolish version of me who had waited six years.

“I need to take a long leave and go back to my hometown to rest up. Maybe for a whole year,” she

said as she walked in. Her gaze swept across the living room, paused on the three hiking buddies/ and finally landed on me.

Then she called out sweetly, “Hi, Nora.”

Hayden’s expression did not change. “You could’ve just texted me about taking time off. You didn’t need to come all the way here.”

“I was afraid you wouldn’t see it.” As Lila spoke, she walked naturally to Hayden’s side, took a thermos from her bag, and handed it to him. “Hayden, I made homemade chicken noodle soup. had extra, so I brought some for you to try.”

Hayden glanced at me and did not take it.

Lila did not look embarrassed. She simply placed the thermos on the coffee table.

It landed right on top of the route map for the Sierra High Route.

One of the hiking buddies could not help laughing. “Employees these days are really dedicated. Even asking for time off has to be done at the boss’s house.”

Another hiking buddy let out a muffled laugh and quickly lowered his head to drink water.

Lila acted as if she had not heard. She turned to me, her eyes bright and sparkling just like the first

time I saw her.

“Nora, you don’t mind, do you? I just graduated, and I don’t know much yet. Hayden has helped me

so much.”

“I don’t mind.” I smiled. “He’s helped plenty of people. One more won’t make a difference.”

Lila’s smile paused slightly.

I looked at Hayden. “Give me my phone. I’m going to the grocery store.”

Hayden hesitated for two seconds. Maybe he thought I should give them space right now, because he finally handed my phone back.

I took it. As I passed Lila, I lowered my eyes to the thermos on the coffee table.

“Chicken soup goes bad if it sits out too long. Remember to take it with you. I don’t keep trash in my

house.’

Lila’s smile almost slipped.

Her eyes instantly turned red, and her hand brushed over her lower abdomen, whether on purpose

or not.

“Nora, I just wanted to thank Hayden because he’s taught me so much at work. If you don’t like it, I

won’t come again.”

Hayden frowned.

His voice carried obvious displeasure. “Nora, why are you being so rude?”

I did not look at him. I opened the front door. “This is who I am.”

“You-” He took a step after me, but with the hiking buddies and Lila present, he forced himself to stop. Then he lowered his voice. “She only came to ask for time off. Was that really necessary?”

I turned around and looked at him, my tone calm. “I said chicken soup goes bad if no one drinks it.

Was I wrong?”

With red-rimmed eyes, Lila tugged at Hayden’s sleeve. “Hayden, stop. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t

have come.”

Hayden’s face darkened even more, and he directed all his anger at me. “Why are you dragging someone else into what’s between us? Is that seriously all you can think about? All you ever care about is getting married. What, can’t you live without a man?”

The moment the words left his mouth, his lips pressed together. Then he quickly added in a stiff voice, “Anyway, I already made plans with them. We’re leaving first thing tomorrow morning. The wedding can’t happen now, but it’s not like I’m never going to marry you. Stop making a scene.”

“Giving a girl a hard time only makes you look petty and small-minded.”

I let out a small laugh. “Whatever you say is right.”

Then I walked out without looking back.

One of the hiking buddies quickly tried to smooth things over. “Hayden, maybe you should Nora. We’ll be gone for days. It’s not good to let resentment fester.”

Hayden stood where he was without moving. “Go after her? So she can get even more entitled in the

future?”

“Let her leave. She’d better not come crawling back to me later.”

The door closed behind me.

Through the door, I heard Hayden curse in frustration.

All at once, I remembered how we had made up after every fight in the past.

It seemed I was always the one who lowered my head first.

When he gave me the silent treatment, I could never last more than three days before texting him.

first.

When he gave me the cold shoulder, I cooked dinner and coaxed him into eating.

When he said I was annoying, I shut my mouth and stopped talking.

I used to think this was the kind of friction every long-term relationship had to go through.

I called it tolerance. I called it effort. I called it “one person always has to take a step back.”

But only now did I realize that was not what it was at all.

He had only known Lila for half a year.

Yet he gave her the position I had once dreamed of.

He gave her a child.

To take care of her for ten months, he would rather “disappear” on the Sierra High Route.

Our relationship had always been ordinary. Even during the most passionate part of it, I had never received treatment like that.

I had always wanted a child, but he had always been extreme about birth control.

So it turned out he did not dislike the idea of having children.

He just did not want to have one with me.

Thinking back, he had worked late more and more often over the past six months, and the messages on his phone had become more frequent.

I thought he was simply focused on his career and wanted to get the company in order before we got

married.

It turned out so many things had already been decided.
