#Chapter 7
Seven days passed.
They were now on the Sierra High Route at an elevation of more than ten thousand feet.
“Here should work.” One of the hiking buddies stopped in front of a talus slope. The fog around them was so thick they could barely see their own hands. “There’s a cliff below this. Toss the phone down there, and the location will stay stuck right here. Even if search-and-rescue comes, they
won’t be able to recover it.”
With one swing of his arm, the phone disappeared into the thick fog.
The signal had already begun cutting in and out.
Hayden was sitting on the living room sofa at the house. When he glanced at the message on his phone from his hiking buddy, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
Soon, Nora would discover that his location had stopped moving
Knowing her, she would definitely panic. Even if she was still mad, she would call and text him.
Then she would swallow her pride and contact those hiking buddies, crying as she asked what had happened to him.
But he waited for a long time, and his phone stayed silent.
He frowned and sent his hiking buddy a message.
Hayden: [It’s been this long. Has Nora reached out to any of you?]
The reply came quickly.
Hiking buddy: [No, Hayden. Nora hasn’t asked us a single thing these past few days.]
He stared at that line, his fingers unconsciously tapping against the sofa armrest.
That was impossible.
She cared about him so much. How could she not ask anything?
Even if she was sulking, how many days had it been?
It was fine.

Once his hiking buddies called the sheriff’s office and the news reached her, she would panic on per
own.
Thinking that, he tossed the phone aside, put an arm around Lila’s shoulders, and said, “Come on. I’ll take you out for something nice to eat.”
Lila smiled sweetly and leaned into his arms.
Two days later, his hiking buddies emerged from the Sierra High Route and called the sheriff’s
office, just as planned.
“One of our teammates got separated from us on the Sierra High Route. The fog was too heavy, and we couldn’t find him. It happened near the cliff by the trail marker.”
On the other end of the call, the authorities began taking notes.
After the hiking buddy hung up, he deliberately sent Nora a message.
Hiking buddy: [Nora, something happened to Hayden. He got separated in the mountains, and his location hasn’t moved. We called the sheriff’s office.]
The message went through.
The hiking buddy waited ten minutes, then sent another one.
Hiking buddy: [Nora, please come quickly. The search-and-rescue team needs a family member to sign the paperwork.]
There was still no reply.
The hiking buddy panicked and called her, but her phone was off.
He hurriedly messaged Hayden.
Hiking buddy: [Hayden, Nora’s phone is off. We can’t reach her!]
Hayden was watching the news.
When he glanced at the message, his brows furrowed slightly.
A headline from the local news channel had already popped up.
[Local Man Hayden H. Reported Missing on Sierra High Route; Search-and-Rescue Crews Head Into Mountains Overnight]

The accompanying image was a photo from one of his previous hikes. The article had already passed a hundred thousand views, and the comment section was exploding.
The corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
Now she should see it. Maybe she was already booking a flight.
Based on what he knew about Nora, she would definitely wait outside the search-and-rescue command post every day, crying and begging them not to give up.
That was why he had specifically arranged for his hiking buddies to stay there and make sure she did not impulsively rush into the mountains.
They would drop just enough hints that he might still be found alive.
That way, she would not do anything reckless.
Thinking that his plan had already worked, he calmly went back to handling work.
