He reached out to hold the glass door open. 

“Hayden?” Lila called from behind him. 

He ignored her and took another step. 

Then he saw a hand settle on the shoulder of that familiar figure. 

A man’s profile came into view. 

Hayden did not recognize him, and his footsteps stopped abruptly. 

He frowned. A self-mocking smile even tugged at the corner of his mouth. 

It seemed it was only a similar figure from behind. 

Nora had been chasing a wedding like he owed her one, with eyes for no one but him, so how could she possibly be letting another man put his arm around her? 

“Hayden, what are you doing?” Lila followed his gaze, glanced over, and curved her lips slightly. 

“We haven’t even made it legal yet. Don’t tell me you’re running away halfway through.” 

“Yeah.” 

He withdrew his gaze. 

After Lila tugged him a few steps inside, he could not help looking back again. 

The two people had already walked away. 

“Hayden?” Lila lifted her face to look at him, her eyes turning red again. “Are you… regretting 

this?” 

He looked down at her, then at the hand she had protectively placed over her stomach. He could not 

help laughing. “Even if you regret it, I never will.” 

“You’re the one getting the short end of the stick.” 

“Even this marriage is only for your prenatal paperwork, and we’ll divorce in a year. Where else would I find a girl as considerate as you?” 

With that, the two of them walked side by side into the marriage services office.

Fifteen minutes later, Lila held the marriage certificate and smiled with red eyes. She stood on tiptoe, wanting to kiss him. 

Hayden froze for a second. 

All at once, the certificate felt heavy in his hand. 

In the original plan, getting legally married had never been part of it. 

When the time came to divorce, he would be a divorced man. 

Nora loved him so much that she definitely would not mind, but Nora’s parents might. 

As long as he was careful, he could keep her parents from finding out. 

With that thought, he called his assistant. 

“Buy some gifts and visit Nora’s parents. Tell them I only went to challenge myself, and that Nora has always been on my mind. Tell them not to push the wedding and not to worry.” 

After hanging up, he let out a breath of relief. 

Because the plan was for him to “disappear” on the way to the Sierra High Route, his phone was not 

with him. 

That also meant he could not contact Nora for the entire year. 

Before he “disappeared,” his hiking buddies would help respond to Nora’s check-ins. 

Nothing should go wrong. 

When he walked out of the office and passed the seating area near the entrance, his footsteps suddenly slowed. 

His eyes were drawn to a champagne-gold wedding favor box sitting on a chair. 

“A newly married couple gave these to our staff just now,” an employee said as she walked over and picked up the box. “Very thoughtful of them.” 

Hayden thought it looked familiar, but he could not remember where he had seen it before. 

“Hayden? What’s wrong?” Lila moved closer. 

“Nothing.” He looked away. “Let’s go.”

He walked out the front doors, and the sunlight made him narrow his eyes. 

The marriage certificate in his pocket pressed against his thigh. It was only a few thin pages, so light it should have felt weightless. 

He lowered his head and glanced at his new phone. 

A message came in from one of his hiking buddies. 

Hiking buddy: [Hayden, we texted Nora in your tone, but she doesn’t seem to have much of a 

reaction.] 

Hayden could not stop frowning. 

In his imagination, Nora should have been asking every hour, “Where are you now?” “Do you have service?” “Are you safe?” 

How could she have no reaction? 

She was probably still angry that he had canceled the wedding and had not coaxed her. 

He scoffed and put the phone back into his pocket. 

Women were like that. You could not spoil them. Give them the cold shoulder for a few days, and they would naturally come clinging back.
