Chapter 8
My mom sniffed, and with a click, she turned on the projector On the screen appeared an eerie, shocking
scene, and I gasped in horror
It was a surveillance video, filmed in my room.
In the footage, my first boyfriend, Gavin Carter, was lying asleep on the bed.
He was deeply immersed in his dreams, sleeping soundly, while I stood beside him, my face twisted with a
wicked grin.
I was holding a butcher knife, raising it high, and then I slammed it down toward his head!
I screamed in terror, immediately closing my eyes, unable to watch any further. My heart leapt into my throat,
nearly jumping out of my chest.
My mom wiped her tears, turned off the video, and walked toward me.
She rolled up her sleeves, and then my dad and sister’s sleeves as well. Their arms were covered in bite
marks-deep and shallow, a shocking sight.
My heart skipped a beat.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
My mom sighed deeply. “Actually, you were married before. Gavin was your first boyfriend. When you
excitedly brought him home, we agreed to your marriage.”
“One night, after you two came back to visit us, you suddenly sleepwalked to the kitchen, grabbed a butcher
knife, saying you wanted to cut a watermelon. Then, what you just saw on the video happened.”
“Gavin was severely injured, almost dying. Your dad and I went bankrupt trying to pay for the medical bills.
His family didn’t pursue the matter, but we realized your behavior was getting increasingly strange.”
“You started saying nonsense, even having hallucinations, claiming we were hurting and insulting you. We
took you to the hospital, and after a long time of treatment, you started improving.”
But I couldn’t remember any of what my mom said.
She told me that after I divorced Gavin, I had dated four other boyfriends.
They had promised to love and protect me, but when marriage came up, my dad would always confess to them about my schizophrenia.
The moment they heard about my condition, even those who had been so loving toward me quickly fled, scared of the implications.
The vows and promises made were nothing in the face of illness.

My parents, wanting me to avoid staying in the hospital, took me home to care for me instead
At first, I took my medicine regularly, and my condition was well-controlled.
But one night, I flushed my pills down the toilet, and after that, I completely lost it.
I began to have wild thoughts, believing that someone was trying to harm me, convinced that they were all bad people.
The injuries on my family’s arms were from when I tried to escape, and they caught me, biting them in the
process.
They didn’t want to hurt me; they just wanted me to accept treatment and live a normal life, happy and
healthy.
Looking at the pained expressions on my family’s faces, I suddenly realized how wrong I had been.
No wonder, no wonder every time I thought I was being abused, my dad always managed to escape without
getting caught by the police.
He never really hit me!
Everything had been just my own imagination!
Learning how much they had struggled over the years to find the best doctors and bear the immense
pressure for my sake, I was overwhelmed with guilt and gratitude.
My tears burst out uncontrollably.
I staggered over to them, hugging them with all my might, wanting to pour all my love and thanks into that
embrace.
I promised I would go to the hospital and accept treatment.
Actually, my days in the hospital weren’t as hard as I imagined.
I took my medicine on time every day, played badminton with other patients when I had free time, played
chess, snacked on sunflower seeds, watched TV, and chatted with everyone. The days passed peacefully.
