Julian shouted my name in wild panic, yet the girl held in his arms could no longer respond.
Adrian tore off his own tunic and pressed it hard against my bleeding mouth, scrambling desperately to stem the outpouring of blood.
Still, the warm, sticky crimson soaked straight through the fabric.
In the turmoil, nobody noticed Lydia convulsing violently before collapsing on the floor behind them.
It was only once the pack healer rushed over with a stretcher that they discovered her unconscious form.
“There’s another one here! Get them both to the medical center, now!”
Time dragged on endlessly down the infirmary’s long corridor.
After what felt like an eternity, the sealed doors of the emergency chamber swung open at last.
The wolf healer stepping out wore a grave, somber expression.
“Alpha Adrian, Beta Julian, we have exhausted every possible measure.”
Julian and Adrian rose instantly, their hearts lodged in their throats.
“Miss Cecilia had already lost her pulse and breath upon arrival… I offer my deepest condolences.”
Julian’s sight blurred, and his frame swayed unsteadily.
Adrian caught hold of him, his tone trembling as he posed the question.
“What of Lydia?”
“She was resuscitated successfully. Her tongue, however, sustained severe damage, and her natural regenerative ability remains extremely weak. Even once the wound closes, she will live with a permanent speech defect.
“Besides that, we recorded erratic, temporary spikes in her brain activity; those readings have now stabilized.”
Julian snatched the healer’s arm sharply.

“Fluctuations? Their souls haven’t swapped back, have they?”
The wolf healer frowned in bafflement.
“Beta Julian, I fail to grasp what you are referring to.”
Julian’s arm fell limp to his side.

He sank onto the bench, terrified to confront the truth of who had truly perished.
Shortly afterward, the healer wheeled out a hospital bed draped with a white shroud.
Adrian stepped forward unsteadily and lifted the cloth.
Cecilia’s face stared back at him.
“I’m so sorry, Cecilia. I was wrong. Please open your eyes and look at me.”
There came no reply.

Lydia remained under close observation within the intensive ward for a full day before being moved to a standard patient room.
Julian and Adrian kept vigil beside her bed without stepping away for even a moment.
At the faintest twitch, both would jerk their heads upward, fixed on her flickering eyelids, clinging to hope for an impossible miracle.
At long last, the girl on the bed opened her eyes.
Her vision was hazy as she stared down at her own thin, feeble hands.
The next instant, she touched her throbbing mouth, and raw terror flooded her gaze.
She attempted to speak, yet only raspy, fractured gasps escaped her throat.
When she spotted Julian, she began flailing her arms wildly, her eyes blazing with fury and accusation.
Julian’s features turned deathly pale, and he stumbled backward half a pace.
Adrian slowly shut his eyes.
No witch’s ritual or diagnostic test was required.
They recognized this soul.

This was not Cecilia.
The two spirits had traded places once more.
She slammed her fists against the mattress, letting out ragged, broken sobs.
Yet the two men standing beside her froze completely.
Cecilia was dead, gone for good.
Lydia had survived, returned to her original vessel the one that could never fully shift into wolf form.
Adrian tried to calm her, his voice rough and hoarse.
“Lydia, you’ve just undergone treatment. Do not overexert yourself. Your tongue is badly injured and needs time to mend.”
But Lydia would not settle.
She clamped tight around Adrian’s wrist, her eyes clouded with anxiety. In the next breath, a sharp voice echoed straight inside his mind through their mental bond.
Adrian, I cannot stay trapped inside this body!
You swore you would wed me! I cannot be your Luna looking like this!
Adrian’s body went rigid.
His gaze drifted involuntarily toward her frail hands.
This body could never bear the duties of a Luna, much less carry him, a powerful heir.
As he studied the face so unlike Cecilia’s, a hollow emptiness flickered across his eyes.
He had once believed his love belonged to Lydia.
Now all he could picture was Cecilia’s pale, cold face beneath the white shroud.
Witnessing his hesitation, Lydia’s grip tightened further.
Adrian, have you changed your mind?
Will you refuse to marry me now that Cecilia is dead?
Adrian snapped out of his daze, pushing down the strange restlessness coiling in his chest, and

gave her hand a firm squeeze.
“I will not. I vowed to marry you, and I never break my promises.”
His tone stayed soft, yet his eyes had lost all the resolve they once held.
“Focus on recovering first. I will find a way to repair your body.”
