Amber’s instinct for self-preservation was faster than I expected. 

She froze for less than three seconds, then instantly shifted her expression.

Her eyes welled up, her lips trembled, and she covered her face, turning to the crowd. 

“Everyone, I don’t know this man. He just showed up out of nowhere with these lies. Who knows if she hired 

him as a stunt double?” 

Her voice was thick with fake tears. 

“I’ve been with Pierce for three years. He proposed to me himself. You’ve all seen him come to pick me up. Are you going to believe me, or some stranger who just popped up?” 

Stacy jumped in immediately. “Right! Who knows if she paid for all these people?” 

But her voice didn’t have the same bite as before. 

The dozens of black unmarked off-roaders were still idling at the mouth of the alley. The twenty-plus uniformed men were still standing in the yard. 

You don’t hire a display of force like that with pocket change. 

Director Harrison didn’t bother explaining himself to Amber. 

He didn’t even look at her again. 

He pulled out his phone and dialed a number. 

“Hello? Pierce? This is Director Harrison. Where are you?” 

He put it on speaker. 

The entire yard heard Pierce’s voice. 

“Director… Harrison?”

“Your wife is at Miss Howard’s wedding. Your car has been totaled. And your wife has been assaulted.” 

Silence hung on the other end for two seconds. 

“What?” 

“I said your wife has been assaulted. If you have the time, I suggest you get here.”
