Chapter 12
Fifteen minutes later.
A black sedan screeched into the alley and slammed to a halt.
Pierce Mason practically vaulted out of the car.
He was in a crisp white shirt, sleeves rolled to his forearms, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead.
The first thing he saw when he stepped into the yard was me.
Then he saw the bruising on my face.
His stride faltered.
Then he saw Amber.
Amber in her wedding gown.
Amber standing beneath the red banner that bore his own name.
“Amber.”
His voice was a low, dangerous rumble.
“What is this?”
Amber lunged at him, a reflex born of desperation.
“Pierce! Let me explain…”
Pierce took a step back.
Amber grabbed at thin air, stumbled, and nearly tripped over her own train.
“I’m asking you, what is this wedding?”
Amber’s tears came harder now.
“You said you’d be with me… you said you’d give me an answer.’
“When the hell did I ever say I’d marry you?”
“You called me ‘baby’ in front of my friends! You bought me bags, bought me a car, and took me to meet your partners! You spent so much money on me…’
“Amber.”
Pierce cut her off.

“You know exactly what that money was for. You played the PR companion at a few dinners, and I paid you for the service. We had a contract. Marriage? I never said that word, not once.”
“You’re lying!”
Amber shrieked.
She turned to the crowd of classmates, painting an accusatory finger at Pierce.
“You all saw it! You saw how attentive he was when he picked me up! You’ve seen the photos!”
Cara shrank back, her gaze hitting the pavement.
Stacy took half a step away.
No one spoke up.
Amber was left waiting for an ally who wasn’t coming.
Pierce didn’t even look at her anymore.
He walked over to me.
“Eleanor.”
I ignored him.
He reached out, trying to touch the bruise on my arm.
I pivoted away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Pierce’s hand hung in the air.
“Eleanor, I didn’t know about any of this. I have nothing with Amber…”
sh’s “You don’t have ‘anything’ with her,” I repeated, “but she takes photos in your study, sfts in your car, and clings to your arm. She told everyone in our group that you’d been courting her for ages.”
“And you say you didn’t know?”
“That time she came to the study, it was after a business dinner and she insisted…”
“I don’t want to hear it.”
I turned to Director Harrison.
“Sir, I’d like to go back.”

Director Harrison nodded.
He tilted his chin at his staff, and a car was pulled around immediately.
As I walked toward the vehicle, Amber screamed out.
“Eleanor!”
I stopped.
“You think you won?”
I turned back.
The tears were still streaming down Amber’s face, but her eyes had shifted.
It wasn’t hurt. It wasn’t fear.
It was pure hate.
“I’m telling you, today isn’t over.”
I stared at her for two seconds, said nothing, and got in the car.
As the door slammed shut, I heard her final words-
“Just you wait.”
