Chapter 15
Five days later. The Veridia Metro Chamber of Commerce annual gala.
Director Harrison handed me an invitation.
“You have to go to this. There’s a partnership we need to finalize, and they specifically requested you.”
“What kind of partnership?”
“The medical tech park on the East Side. It’s with Thomas Sterling of Sterling Capital. He’s over seventy, and he told me he only trusts the people who came out of your father’s old team.”
Before my father passed, the team he led at the lab was doing fundamental research on medical equipment. The results from a decade ago are still cited in multiple fields today
Sterling Capital is one of the top three investment firms in Veridia Metro. Thomas Sterling had been friends
with my father for years.
“OK. I’ll go.”
The gala was held in the ballroom on the top floor of the Veridia Grand Hotel.
When I arrived, the hall was already packed with hundreds of people.
Business tycoons, academics, government officials, all mingling, glasses in hand.
I was wearing a dark blue tailored dress Dr. Helen had forced on me.
She told me if I showed up in my utility jacket, the bouncers would throw me out.
I’d just grabbed a glass of water and retreated to a corner when I heard a familiar laugh.
Amber.
She was wearing a silver off-the-shoulder evening gown, arm-in arm with a middle-aged woman, greeting a table of guests.
I recognized the woman next to her.
Beatrice Mason.
Pierce’s mother.
I’d only met Beatrice once. She was there three years ago when we signed our prenuptial agreement. She hadn’t said a single word to me, she just signed the papers and walked out.
Today, she was clutching Amber’s arm, beaming at her.

Amber spotted me.
Her smile didn’t fade, it grew wider.
She dragged Beatrice straight toward me.
“Beatrice, that’s her. The person I told you about.”
Beatrice eyed me up and down.
“So, you’re Eleanor Coates?”
“Yes.”
“I heard you caused quite a scène at the wedding. Brought a whole convoy of cars to threaten people?”
“It wasn’t a scene. I went because…”
“I don’t care why you went,” Beatrice cut me off with a flick of her wrist. “I’m making the call on Pierce and Amber. That little strategic marriage of yours? That was just you kids playing house. I don’t recognize it.”
“Since we’re all here, I’ll make it clear. My lawyers have already drawn up the divorce papers. You sign them. Amber is the only one who belongs as Pierce’s wife.”
People at the nearby tables stopped talking, all eyes locked on us.
Amber cast her gaze downward, feigning bashfulness.
But the curve of her lips was impossible to hide.
I looked straight at Beatrice.
“Does Pierce agree with this?”
“Whether he agrees or not is irrelevant. I decide what happens,”
“Since you’re the one making the decisions,” I said, my voice steady, “do you actually know what keeps Pierce’s company afloat?”
Beatrice frowned,
“He owes everything to his own…’
“He owes everything to my family’s influence.”
