Chapter 14
Silence for three days.
At noon on the fourth, a notification popped up from our old classmates’ group chat.
I’d already been kicked out./
But Dr. Helen helped me with the screenshots.
Amber had posted a long, rambling manifesto.
The gist of it: I’d crashed her wedding, hired a bunch of thugs to pose as government officials just to scare her, and spun a web of lies to frame her as the “other woman.
She claimed her love with Pierce Mason was ironclad.
She claimed she’d already moved into the Emerald Crest Estates villa.
She claimed I was a psycho who would stop at nothing to ruin her happiness.
Attached to the post was a screenshot of her chat history with Pierce.
It was peppered with suggestive messages, dinner plans, and one particular text from Pierce that read, [Miss you].
I studied it carefully.
“Half of these texts are real.” I told Dr. Helen. “The other half are stitched together.”
“How can you tell?”
“The timestamps don’t match. She screenshotted messages from different dates into a single frame.”
Even though I was out of the group, the news kept trickling in through various channels.
That afternoon, I received three texts from burner numbers.
r
First: [Eleanor, don’t think hiring a few goons will scare me off. Amber isn’t someone you can just push
around.]
Second: [Hear you work for some classified lab? How classified is it? Sounds like a load of crap you made up to look important.]
Third: [Take a hint and stay away from Pierce. He and Amber are soulmates.]
The numbers were different, but the voice was identical.
Stacy’s fingerprints were all over this.

At 8:00 PM, Pierce called.
This time, I picked up.
“Eleanor, Amber moved into Emerald Crest Estates.”
“I know.”
“When I got home today, she’d already changed the locks. Security said she used the temporary fob I gave her ages ago. They couldn’t stop her.”
“That’s your problem.”
“I’ve already got people working on the locks. She’ll be out tomorrow. Eleanor, listen to me-”
“Pierce.” I cut him off. “I’m not listening to your excuses about your relationship with Amber over the phone.”
“If you have something to say, say it to my face. But not now.”
He went silent for a few seconds.
“Fine. Tell me when, and I’ll be there.”
I hung up.
When I put the phone down, I noticed Dr. Helen standing in the doorway, arms crossed, watching me.
“So, what’s the play?”
“I’m waiting for her next move.”
Dr. Helen arched an eyebrow.
“You’re that sure she’s going to make one?”
“She moved into my home,” I said. “She won’t stop now.”
